Magnetic Therapy for Pain Relief

Historically it is reported that magnets have been around for an extremely long time. Magnets were first documented around 2500-3000 years BC. Their origins are first noted in Asia Minor in a vast land called Magnesia. The earth there was enriched with iron oxide which attracted metals to it. The locals named it Magnetite.

Another story is told of a young boy, who lived 2500 years BC, called Magnes ? a shepherd on Mount Ida. One day he was tending his sheep whilst wearing sandals which contained iron in the sole. He found it hard to walk up the mountain as his feet felt heavy and stuck to the rock face. Mount Ida was found to contain a rock called Lodestone, which is the first known magnetic mineral. It is reported that Lodestone was named Magnes after the boy who discovered it, and it later came to be known as magnet.

Cleopatra was probably the first celebrity to use magnets. It is documented that she slept on a Lodestone to keep her skin youthful. The therapeutic knowledge was passed to the Greeks who have been using magnets for healing since 2500 BC Aristotle and Plato talked of the benefits of Lodestones in their work.

Magnets have been used in Chinese medicine from around 2000 BC in-conjunction with reflexology and acupuncture. It is still used today as a first line treatment for many common complaints.

3,500 years after they were first discovered, magnets have gained popularity in Europe and the USA. In the 15th century a Swiss physician Paracelsus recognised the therapeutic powers of magnets. He wrote medical papers on the influence of magnets on the inflammatory processes within the body.

In the 16th century an English doctor Dr William Gilbert made a scientific study of electricity and magnetism. He published one of the first books about magnetic therapy called ?De Magnet?. Dr Gilbert was also Queens Elizabeth I personal physician and it is said that she used magnets under his direction.

Michael Faraday, also known as the founder of Biomagnetics made extensive discoveries in magnetic healing during the 18th century. His work is still used as a framework for modern day magnetic treatments. Dr Mesmer (the father of hypnotism) and Dr Samuel Hahnemann (the father of homoeopathy) also contributed to his remarkable work.

20th century pioneers include Dr Kreft a German doctor who in 1905 studied the healing effects of magnets on rheumatic disease, sciatica and neuralgia. 1926 revealed Dr Criles work on the impact of magnets on cancer cells and this was followed 10 years later in 1936 with Albert Davis carrying out tests on the effects of the north and south poles of a magnet.

However the last 15 years has shown a prolific increase in medical research into magnetic therapy. There have been over 57 studies in the USA into incurable diseases and magnetics. Some of the most recent are:

1990 ? University if Hawaii tested magnetic fields on patients with osteoarthritis.

1992- Stiller et al a randomised double blind trial of wound healing in venous leg wounds.

1999- New York Medical College tested magnetic insoles on diabetic patients.

2001- University of Virginia tested magnetic mattress covers on patients with Fibromyalgia.

2004- University of Exeter and Plymouth tested magnetic bracelets on patients with osteoarthritis

Magnetic therapy is gaining in popularity worldwide with many celebrity devotees including: Cherie Blair, Bill Clinton, Anthony Hopkins, Prince William, Queen Elizabeth II, Shirley MaClaine, Venus Williams, Michael Jordan, Andre Agassi, Jack Niklaus and many more.

Magnetic devices are now registered as prescribable medical devices in 54 countries worldwide With new research being completed each year and doctors at last acknowledging that it is not ?witch doctory? we shall hopefully see, with in the next few years, magnetic devices being prescribed on the NHS in-conjunction with conventional pain killing drugs.

Debbie Shimadry is qualified magnetic therapist and pain nurse specialist. She appears on several BBC radio stations as an expert guest on magnetic therapy and is also the managing director of World of Magnets ltd. http://www.worldofmagnets.co.uk. Acupuncture And Chinese Medicine

Chinese medicine, often known as Oriental medicine or traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), encompasses a vast array of folk medical practices based on mysticism. It holds the belief that the body?s vital energy (Qi) circulates in the body through channels known as meridians, with branches connected to bodily organs and functions. A disruption or imbalance of the Qi leads to illness. Ancient remedies such as Qigong, use of herbs and acupuncture are believed to restore the balance of the Qi.

Traditional acupuncture as practiced in China for more than 2,500 years is one of the vital components of the Chinese medicine system. It involves the insertion of stainless steel needles into various body areas, along with a low-frequency current to the needles to produce greater stimulation. Other Chinese practices used separately or in combination with acupuncture are: moxibustion (burning of floss or herbs applied to the skin); injection of sterile water, procaine, morphine, vitamins, or homeopathic solutions through the inserted needles; applications of laser beams (laserpuncture); placement of needles in the external ear (auriculotherapy); and acupressure (use of manual pressure). The acupuncture treatment is applied to acupuncture points, located throughout the body. These acupuncture points as believed by today?s acupuncturists number more than 2,000.

For 40 years, the acupuncture system has gained popularity and has been widely accepted as an alternative medicine in both developed and developing counties. The American Cancer Society (ACS) formed for the treatment of cancer and treatment-related symptoms has recommended the use of acupuncture in cancer patients. It has been known to treat pain, nausea, breathlessness, vasomotor symptoms and limb edema.

The Healing Arts: Exploring HeartConsciousness Part 7 Hearts Speak To Each Other

If you?ve ever been in love, you understand the metaphor. But did you know that there are actual physical, measurable indications of that truth?

In studies using electrocardiograms (again, from information provided by Joseph Chilton Pearce, with his permission) it has been shown that a mother and child, when separated, will have different heart rhythms and rates, but when brought to close proximity, their electrocardiograms will match.

It?s not limited to Mother and offspring. Other studies have been done that showed a person in emotional distress could go to a person for comfort and, while being held, their heart would fall into rate and rhythm with the person holding them. The affected person, taking the ?energetic? lead from the comforting person, would calm down.

This is called ?entrainment.? Entrain literally means, ?To pull or draw along after itself.? Metaphorically, that is one way of describing what healers do: pull or draw along people in need through a challenge or crisis.

On an energetic level, using heart-consciousness is a powerful force. On its own, the heart projects a measurable electromagnetic field surrounding the body for a distance of twelve feet or more. This field is so powerful that in a study it was found you could literally do an electrocardiograph reading of heart activity from three feet away -- without wires! Further studies have shown that some individuals have control of how intense the field is, or how far it can project.

I?m sure you can recall many a time when you?ve walked into a room and suddenly been ?drawn to? a particular person or group of people because there was, literally, the feeling of an energetic pull, or attraction. Something in you was naturally attuned to something out there and you needed to be close to it.

This is not a one-sided relationship. Whether we are conscious of it or not, we are both sending AND receiving signals from our hearts back and forth to each other. Witness how you can sometimes be walking behind someone and you know they are ?in a mood.? We know it?s there, because we do get it in glimpses. It?s just a matter of strengthening our abilities to actively use heart-consciousness in our lives.

As a paramedic, I was ?tricked? into a state of heart-consciousness by compassion. I would find myself in the midst of an emergency and some facet of the circumstances and/or patient would strike me so personally that I united my own will to live with theirs. I attained a deep connection to the other?s experience on a very primal level.

In that state I found myself able to juggle what appears to be two different worlds. While riding the waves of the other person?s emotions ? which, essentially are expressions of their life?s force ? I would also be able to sort and assimilate physical data, and then make appropriate choices for emergency intervention.

In an emergency, the key to effectiveness is getting the patients into a state to where they can accept the treatment you?re offering. The more receptive the patient, the more effective will be your treatment. One way is to overcome the body?s natural responses (abject fear, for example) by administering medications.

Another way is to connect with the person and, using the moment-to-moment cues you get, move his or her attention off of themselves and on to you as a sort of focal point for their hope. From there, you build bridges that help bring the patient into a more favorable state for healing to begin. In that case, you actually become ?partners? in the healing process.

When I was able to attain a connection like that, I had some amazing experiences. If I had to put them all in a blender, the conclusion would come out that a part of me would receive information from a part of them that would help, if not lead, me to take the most effective next step in their care.

I?ve come to the conclusion that our hearts were in communication and telling each (and both!) of our heads what to do next.

This has been my same experience while working in personal growth workshops and counseling. After having established a connection with the person I was with, I found myself reaching into my past experience and pulling out an obscure ?happening? in my life as an example or illustration. We?re talking something like ?It popped out of my mouth? more than something that I consciously searched for!

In those times, whatever I brought forth was so on target with the person?s next step toward transformation/healing we were both astounded! Out of moments like those, I, too, experienced a form of healing -- to realize that every moment of my own life can find its place to heal others.

When you gain practice in getting in touch with the consciousness of your heart, you will be able to strengthen what I call the ?muscles of choice? that have to do with projecting and receiving that energy. With more practice, you can read what comes to you from others much better, and use that to influence how and when the intelligent energy that is your heart expands and contracts, and who it affects and how.

In our last installment, we?ll discuss heart-consciousness and the healer.

Aromatherapy: Using Perfumes and Essential Oils

The soul of man in love is full of perfumes and sweet odours. Plutarch.

In our times, all the finest produce of the whole world is usually available to us from our local stores. We live with affluence beyond any previously known era in history which allows us choices regarding what were once luxury items. This applies particularly to our use of perfume both as a means of sensory satisfaction as well as for more practical purposes. Perfume continues to provide a subject of fascination today.

There are many wonderful scents and perfumes available in toiletries and body perfumes. Essential oils provide us with perfumes which are entirely natural without chemical additives and which are healing as well as pleasant in their effect. Incense sticks provide a means of perfuming through fumes, which is where our word for perfume originally came from. And of course we have all the perfumed delights of nature to enjoy in our walks in the wild, in our enjoyment of our garden, or in the delicate scent of a rose.

In a variety of ways we seek to indulge our sense of olfaction as we continue to increase the use of perfumes in our lives.

Most gardeners include a variety of perfumed herbs and plants in their gardens.

We use scented oils to keep away flies and insects.

Although we no longer have to spread scented rushes on the floor to take away bad odours in the home, we still wish to use perfumed sprays in bathrooms and toilet areas.

We generally use scents to provide a pleasing atmosphere throughout the house and when preparing for dinner guests.

Oils from timber are favoured for application to existent furniture to help preserve it and also for scent.

Many burn incense whilst meditating.

Churches burn copious resins and oils in their ritual incense.

Physiotherapists, naturopaths and aromatherapists use perfumed massage oils on skin.

Therapists prescribe direct inhalation of essential oils to relieve symptoms of illness.

Vaporizers are essential in relieving respiratory problems.

Bath oils are used to provide a delightful way of relieving stress.

Scented pillows as favoured for sleep inducement.

Healing oils such as eucalyptus and peppermint are used as embrocation or as an inhalant in cases of bronchial and respiratory problems .

Essential oils can be diluted with almond oil for use as a safe underarm deodorants.

A drop can safely be smeared on a light globe to diffuse light scent

A few drops of a perfumed oil on a tissue can be placed in a paper bin - or even rubbish bin for a pleasing effect.

Essential oils such as rosemary can be diluted with olive oil and massaged into the scalp to perfume the hair when brushing.

Perfumed oil can be massaged into the feet before bed to aid relaxation.

These and many other ingenious ways are used in making practical use of perfume in modern lifestyles.

However, the most important to so many of us, is the use of body perfume. This popular interest in perfumes however seems to arise not only from a desire to seem attractive but because of the need to have expression of the personality through the quality of one's personal body perfume and this requires patience and discrimination in selecting 'your' personal perfume for regular use. Selecting from the enormous range of commercial perfumes is a daunting task but there are many who enjoy the search. Selecting from the natural essential oil range is somewhat easier because it is limited compared with the sophisticated fashionable perfumes.

Discrimination is the first thing to cultivate, in order to fully benefit from the knowledge of perfumes and delight in them to the full. It is necessary to consciously develop your olfactory sense as a wine taster must do with the palate.

Always remember that certain artificially produced scents can be harmful when inhaled and some deodorizers actually work on the principle of deadening your sense of smell rather than trying to cancel the odour. All chemical products can have short or long term negative effects so the caution is repeated - use the natural essential oils and perfumes in preference to a product that uses chemicals in its production. The sense of smell is extremely delicate and can be seriously injured, as can the brain, by inhalation of the smell or vapours of toxic materials.

Some of the popular and delightful natural perfumes available as essential oils are Lavender, Sandalwood, Neroli, Lemon, Rose, Lemongrass, Ylang-ylang and Pine, but there are many others to try.

Essential oils are strong and usually require only a drop or two with any application.

However, should you suffer skin reaction, or wish to dilute the pure essential oils, almond oil is advised.

Acne Medicines That Work

Acne is a type of skin lesion caused by blockage of sebum gland follicle duct. The gland gets infected by P.Acnes, a bacterium found naturally in the skin. There are many medicines available in the market for acne cure. The medicines are mostly available as acne creams, acne lotions, acne cleansers, acne pills, acne injections etc. The acne cream ingredients may include the following medicines.

Benzoyl peroxide, triclosan and chlorhexidine gluconate are anti bacterials that kill the bacteria present in acne. Benzoyl peroxide acne lotion is considered the best medicine and has a high effectiveness rate of nearly 75%.

Salicylic acid, glycolic acid and other mild acids acne lotions work by peeling skin on a micro level and thereby opening the pore. They are used for mild to moderate acne.

Erythromycin, clindamycin and tetracycline are antibiotics that are either applied topically in the form of acne lotions or taken orally in the form of acne pills. They are used to kill the bacteria. Acne Care for Teenagers and Adults

Acne and acne care have long been part of adolescence and the teenage years. We?ve all heard the stories about some poor girl waking up to a horrible blemish on her nose the day before a big date.

But acne strikes adults too, and acne care can actually become more difficult in adulthood. Acne is caused by clogged pores, which are often the result of oily skin. Adults are more likely to have combination skin types ranging from dry or normal to oily, and this can make acne care a challenge.

Acne can also be caused by irritation to the skin from confining clothing, chafing or even shaving. Hormones are also a contributing factor, which is one of the reasons why acne is so prevalent in adolescence and why pregnant women can find themselves dealing with outbreaks and requiring some sort of care.

While there are many causes of this relatively harmless but nonetheless frustrating and often painful skin condition, the guidelines for care are pretty much the same across the board.

Cleaning the affected area with a mild soap or cleanser is an important part of acne care routine. When suffering from acne, there is often a temptation to use astringent cleansers. Such products are generally not recommended for irritated skin.

An important component of acne care is to avoid irritation to the skin which might cause new outbreaks. Oily hair should be washed regularly and be kept pulled away from the face and forehead areas when dealing with facial acne. Careful shaving is also an important part of your acne care routine. Women who are dealing with acne outbreaks are often tempted to hide them with makeup. This can make the situation worse and counteract the positive effects of an acne control routine, particularly if an oil-based makeup is used. While concealing acne with makeup can temporarily help deal with embarrassment or self-consciousness, it can hinder the healing process, so avoiding putting foundations or other makeup on the irritated area is the best bet.

People who are dealing with acne are often tempted to pick at or ?pop? pimples, zits or blackheads, call them what you will. Either because they have a misconception that this is part of effective acne care or out of a simple desire to get rid of blemishes. This temptation should be avoided at all costs, since doing so only aggravates the situation and can also lead to scarring.

Even when these general guidelines are followed, even mild cases of acne can sometimes require a visit to your doctor or the dermatologist. Professional acne care can include a variety of treatments including topical medications or pills. Acne can take several weeks to heal and ongoing acne care routine and habits are encouraged to minimize future outbreaks.

Effective Acne Treatment: Fatty Acids

Finding an effective acne treatment can be a difficult task. Many people rely on over the counter acne medications to combat the skin condition. Others believe that proper diet is the most effective acne treatment. Along with this second theory, consuming enough essential fatty acids is a very effective acne treatment. Fatty acids help control the production hormones which cause excess amounts of oil to clog pores and hair follicles. Thus, eating products high in fatty acids is an effective acne treatment for people of all ages.

The three major fatty acids are omega 3 oil, omega 6 oil, and omega 9 oil. These fatty acids should be consumed daily for effective acne treatment to occur. When the body lacks sufficient amounts of these fatty acids, it may cause an increase in the size of oil glands, the eruption of irreparable skin blemishes, as well as a weakened immune system.

There are long lists of foods that contain these fatty acids and, therefore, are essential for effective acne treatment. Salmon, avocados, sardines, different types of nuts and seeds are all high in the essential fatty acids needed for effective acne treatment.

Individuals who are allergic to nuts have other alternatives which are equally sufficient in fatty acids. Olive oil, olives, and dark green veggies, such as kale, spinach, mustard and collard greens, can also assist in effective acne treatment.

Thus, including these products which are rich in fatty acids could possibly be the most effective acne treatment there is.

Kriyas and Vamana Dhouti

A disease-free system should be the starting ground for yogasanas and pranayama. There are six specific cleansing techniques, known as Shat Kriyas, which eliminate impurities and help cure many ailments.

This is a process of cleansing the interior of the stomach. Drink four to six glasses of tepid water, with a little salt added to it, early in the morning on an empty stomach. Then stand up, bend forward, insert the middle and index fingers of the right hand into the mouth until they touch the uvulva. Tickle it until you feel a vomiting sensation. The saline water thus ejected will bring up bile and other toxic matter with it. Repeat the process till all the water is vomited out.

This should be done once a week or as and when necessary.

It is beneficial for cleansing the stomach in cases of excessive bile, constipation, and gastric troubles.

Persons suffering from hyperacidity should perform kunjal with unsalted water.

It gives relief from headaches, nervous weakness, chronic cold, cough and asthma.

It should not be practised by those suffering from high blood pressure, ulcers and heart trouble.

Early Detection And Breast Cancer

It is generally accepted that by the time a cancer is found by mammography or palpated during a clinical breast exam, the cancer has been growing for 8-10 years. What if we could have been alerted to the problem as it was developing, rather than wait till it is large enough to be seen by the naked eye? Would that be of interest to you?

There exists a technology that can detect an issue YEARS before a tumor can be seen on X-ray or palpated during an exam. This technology has been approved by the FDA as an adjunctive screening tool since 1982 and offers NO RADIATION, NO COMPRESSION AND NO PAIN. For women who are refusing to have a mammogram or those who want clinical correlation for an existing problem, digital infrared thermal imaging may be of interest.

There are very strict protocols both for testing and interpreting. Perhaps due to these guidelines, thermography (as with all digital technology) has exploded in its technique and capabilities. Thermal cameras detect heat emitted from the body and display it as a picture on a computer monitor. These images are unique to the person and remain stable over time. It is because of these characteristics that thermal imaging is a valuable and effective screening tool. Tumors or other breast diseases measures warmer than surrounding tissue and can thereby alert a physician to a problem before a tumor is actually palpable.

Medical doctors who interpret the breast scans are board certified thermologists. Thermography is not limited by breast density and is ideal for women who have had cosmetic or reconstructive surgery. Thermography, because it analyzes a developing process, may identify a problem several years before mammography. DITI may allow women time and opportunity to support their immune system, change their lifestyle and give their body the best chance to alter their fate.

DITI has an average sensitivity and specificity of 90%. An abnormal thermogram carries a 10x greater risk for cancer. A persistently abnormal thermogram carries a 22x greater risk for cancer. Thermography, as well as mammography is a personal choice for women. This decision ideally should be made in collaboration between you and your physician. However, thermography does not require a physician?s order.

Thermographic screening is not covered by most insurance companies but is surprisingly affordable for most people. For more information or to find a certified clinic in your area, go to www.proactivehealthonline.com.

Ligaments Vertebral Arteries and the Sub OcciputTheir Role in Structural Integrity

The structural health of the neck is not just the maintenance of muscles, but the maintenance of;

(1)The Ligaments; That support the vertebrae but have a minimal blood supply, unlike muscle tissue. Ligaments are the tissue system that binds bones together supporting joints and regulating their range of movement. Being poor in blood supply, they do not heal easily and are prone to calcium deposits, causing wear and tear arthritic changes to the joints. This can cause friction against the wall of the Vertebral Arteries as they pass through the Cervical Vertebrae ? wearing the wall thin and or, impeding the flow. Ligaments need deep massage and traction to promote good blood supply, full ranges of movement and the re-absorption of calcium deposits.

(2)The Vertebral Arteries travel up through the vertebral foramina of each cervical vertebra. They enter the spine at the level of the 6th cervical vertebra (base of the neck) and travel up to the head where, to get into the cranium the vertebral arteries take, Two 90degree turns to supply about two thirds of the blood supply to the brain - which needs a minute to minute supply of glucose and oxygen to maintain its normal function. The vertebral arteries supply the deeper, autonomic centers of the brain, if the blood supply is diminished to these areas we have all types of dysfunctional conditions arising ? particularly as we age! If you can help to maintain the structural integrity of your cervical spine (neck) and therefore the blood supply to your brain the better you are going to be getting older ? as gravity grinds us ALL into the ground ?the inexorable factor?. People forget that GRAVITY is the main reason we need 8 hours sleep a day and that our ?Rigging? is our best way to pass this force through us, with as little wear and tear as possible.

(3)The area known as the ?Sub Occiput? is the level of the neck where the spine articulates with the base of the head, or cranium.

Traction and deep inhibition to this area can affect our function through the many important physiological centers that are situated at the top of the neck. The Carotid sinus, at the top of the Carotid arteries carries the other third of the blood supply to the brain. This collection of nerves controls feedback information from the hearts pumping, for regulation of blood pressure.

The 10th cranial nerve ?The Vagus Nerve? leaves the cranium in this region and is one half of the control on the hearts rate of beating. The vagal nerve supplies rhythmic nerve impulses/control to the motor functions of most of the gastro-intestinal system, our ?peristalsis? or gut ?motion?.

The amount of muscle investment in the Sub Occiput is great ? it needs to turn the head very quickly ? with control, it needs to hold the heaviest part of our body on the top of two small condyles and not impair that blood supply or pinch those nerve. These muscles are intimately connected to the muscles of mastication and all the emotional elements that the mouth and jaw can bring up ? that makes us grind our teeth at night or clench so tight we wake with a pounding headache. The Sub Occiput can be tight when we go to bed, impairing our sleep and even tighter the next morning, the impairment of blood supply can be debilitating, the whole cycle repeating more and more intensely each day.

There are so many control mechanisms in the Sub Occipital Region and the rest of the neck and spine, that normal structural integrity is very, very important to the normality of most of our ?Function?. Most professional Physical Therapists, which are Osteopaths, Chiropractors, Physiotherapists, Naturopaths and Masseur?s have this knowledge, spend a little time to get to know a good one and you will have a much stronger armory to approach Diss-ease and generally live a better quality of life.

The Best Adult Acne Treatments

You may be surprised to learn that you can get severe acne well into your 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond. Fortunately, there are adult acne treatments that can be quite effective.

There are several causes of adult acne, with stress usually a contributing factor. Many adults lead more stressful lives than they are aware of. Eventually all this stress begins to take a toll on your body. Internal turmoil manifests in your skin, and sometimes presents as acne. While stress affects both genders, women run the risk of having acne that is caused by low-grade cosmetics. Cheap cosmetics can trap bacteria in your pores and increase your chances of breakouts. Other contributing factors to the onset of adult acne may include hormonal imbalances and reactions to certain medications, including birth control pills.

The best treatment for adult acne may simply be a lifestyle change. Reducing stress can certainly help alleviate the problem. Try to use higher grade cosmetics, and find out if any medications you are taking are causing adverse reactions.

There are a number of conventional and alternative adult acne treatments, so speak to your doctor or dermatologist to find out which one is right for you. They may suggest a simple cleaning regimen of benzoyl peroxide. Many adults have found that simply using benzoyl peroxide is an effective adult acne cure. This will not work for everyone though. Your doctor may determine that you need a stronger medication such as Accutane, an oral prescription medication for severe adult acne.

The side effects from some of the more powerful adult acne treatments can be quite painful, so many individuals look towards natural treatments first. Some of the newest products for treating mild to moderate breakouts are natural antioxidant formulas, and many consider them the best treatment for adult acne, as they works from the inside out, naturally clearing up acne and preventing future breakouts from occurring.

Natural treatments such contain vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other powerful nutrients that minimize adult acne without the potential side effects of harsh over-the-counter-medications and prescription acne drugs. Although there is no definitive adult acne cure, natural treatments can be quite an effective alternative.

With so many adult acne treatments available, you are sure to find one that works for you. There are pimple creams for occasional breakouts you can find in any drug store, powerful drugs available through your dermatologist, and everything in between. The best treatment for adult acne is out there, you just have to find it!

Your Risk of Cancer Can Increase With Weight Gain!

We hear it all the time?lose weight for your health. Few people however, realize the extent to which this is critical to their physical well-being and ultimately their life expectancy.

In January 2003, the Journal of the American Medical Association featured a study finding that obesity appears to lessen life expectancy, especially among young adults. The researchers compared Body-Mass Index (BMI) to longevity and found a correlation between premature death and higher BMIs. For example, a 20-year-old white male, 5?10? weighing 288 pounds with a BMI of greater than 40 was estimated to lose 13 years of his life as a result of obesity.

Jamie McManus, M.D., F.A.A.F.P. and author of ?Your Personal Guide to Wellness? notes that while this study referenced extreme levels of obesity, there are still millions of overweight people in developed countries with a life expectancy rate that is three to five years less than their healthy-weight counterparts. She also estimates that there are 600,000 obesity related deaths each year in America.

Just how does obesity shorten our lifespan? The answer to this question is complex, yet there is a clear link between obesity and the development of cancer. An extensive study conducted by the American Cancer Institute involving 750,000 people showed that obesity significantly increased the risk of cancer developing in the following organs: breast, colon, ovaries, uterus, pancreas, kidneys and gallbladder.

Michael Thun, MD, vice-president of epidemiology and surveillance research for the American Cancer Society (ACS) says one reason obesity may raise cancer risk is because fat cells produce a form of estrogen called estradiol that promotes rapid division of cells, increasing chances of a random genetic error while cells are replicating, which can lead to cancer. In addition, fat centered around the abdomen may increase insulin and insulin-like growth factors in the blood, which may increase cancer risk.

Women who are obese after menopause have a 50% higher relative risk of breast cancer, notes Thun, and obese men have a 40% higher relative risk of colon cancer?. Gallbladder and endometrial cancer risks are five times higher for obese individuals?.

There is evidence that cancer rates in developed countries are increasing at 5 to 15 times faster than developing countries. A major contributor to this alarming reality has proven to be diet. In populations where the diet consists mostly of fresh fruit and vegetables and whole grains ? in contrast to the typical Western diet of fatty meats, refined flours, oils and sugars ? the risk of cancer is much lower.

The interaction of diet and the development of cancer is an active field of research and Dr David Heber, M.D., Ph.D. and author of ?What Color is Your Diet?, says ?It appears that diet has its most significant effects after the cancer has already formed, acting to inhibit or stimulate the growth of that cancer?. At the risk of oversimplifying a complex set of interactions, the typical Western diet that leads to obesity may actually act to stimulate the growth of cancer cells.

It is never too late to improve your health through healthful eating and adopting a more health-giving lifestyle. Here are simple steps to follow which can make an immediate improvement to your health and vitality.

1. Check your Body Mass Index (BMI) to determine if weight has become health risk. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 60% of Americans are overweight, defined as having a BMI (a ratio of height to weight) over 25. Of those, nearly half (27%) qualify as obese, with a body mass index of 30 or more. In 1980, just 15% of Americans were considered obese. You can check your BMI at the website below.

2. Match your diet to your body?s requirements. If you eat and drink more calories than your body requires you will put on weight. Learn to control calories and portion sizes, make recipes leaner, and eat infrequently from fast food restaurants. Also learn how to snack with healthful choices.

3. Color your diet with a large variety of colorful, cancer-fighting fruit and vegetables. There are seven different color ranges of both fruit and vegetables and by choosing between 5 to 9 daily serves from a wide range of fruit and vegetables, we are extending our consumption of cancer (and other disease) fighting nutrients.

4. Eat lean protein with every meal. Protein provides a powerful signal to the brain providing a longer sense of fullness. The right source of protein is essential to controlling your hunger with fewer calories and necessary to maintain your lean muscle mass. Choices of protein should be flavored soy shakes with fruit; the white meat of chicken and turkey, seafood such as shrimps, prawns scallops and lobster and ocean fish or vegetarians may prefer soy based meat substitutes.

5. Rev up your metabolism with activity. If you want to enjoy a lifetime of well-being, exercise is a key ingredient. Colleen Doyle, MS, RD, director of nutrition and physical activity for the American Cancer Society (ACS), says adults should do something for 30 minutes each day that takes as much effort as a brisk walk. Children should be active for an hour each day. We are more likely to develop habits around things we enjoy, so seek activities which you enjoy doing. It is also helpful to build physical activity into your daily routine: use the stairs instead of the escalator or lift at work, park your car in the parking bay furthest from the super marketing and don?t use the remote control to change TV channels.

6. Get support to ensure you develop a healthful eating plan and reach your goal weight. Whilst a small percentage of people possess the discipline to lose weight, many obese people have developed strong thoughts and habits concerning the food they eat. In order to establish new habits, most people respond well to some form of consistent encouragement and coaching. A study, ?Effects of Internet Behavioral Counseling on Weight Loss in Adults at Risk of Type 2 Diabetes? shows that participants who had the support of weight loss coaching lost more weight than those who didn?t. The study concluded that the support of a weight loss coach can significantly improve weight loss results.

Being overweight or obese has been identified next to smoking, as the most preventable major risk to developing cancer. Even small weight losses have been shown to have beneficial health effects. So it?s never to late to start and you can never be too young or too old to be concerned about your health and do something about achieving a more healthy weight.

The Many Benefits Of Acne Blue Light Treatments

Light therapy and more specifically, acne blue light treatments, have proven to be very successful in treating mild to moderate inflammatory acne.

Light therapy is not a new idea. The effects of color on the human body in relation to health and happiness have long been researched.

Documentation regarding the healing properties of color date as far back as 1876 when Augustus Pleasanton published his theory Blue and Sun-lights. He believed that colored light was effective in treating pain and disease. He was right.

In 1878, Edwin Babbit corroborated Pleasanton's theory when he published The Principles of Light and Color. Babbit took the theory of color to new levels. He identified the color red as a stimulant of blood and nerves prescribing it's use for the treatment of such conditions as rheumatism, exhaustion and paralysis. Blues and violets, Babbit believed to have soothing, anti-inflammatory properties which he prescribed for treating meningitis, headaches and sunstroke.

Today, new clinical studies have shown remarkable results in acne patients who participated in blue and red light treatments. Why? Without getting too clinical, the blue light destroys P.acnes, the bacteria responsible for acne inflammation. The red light causes the skin to heal up to 200 percent faster.

This is terrific news for acne sufferers in search of an effective home treatment for acne. In spite of the wide range of topical and oral acne treatments available today, many people either do not respond to them or they develop side-effects. Acne light therapy or chromotherapy is the answer to the growing demand for a safe, natural, holistic approach to acne treatment.

Acne light therapy is a safe, completely natural method of treatment that you can do on your own, in the privacy of your own home. Simply set up blue and red lamps and 'bathe' in the light just as you would in a tanning booth. You can use both colored lamps at the same time and it only requires 15 minutes each day.

With the acne blue light treatments the bacteria causing your inflammation will self-destruct and the red light will cause lesions to heal as much as 200 percent faster than normal. The principle is very similar to the idea that sunlight improves acne, and it does, but harmful UV rays also cause premature aging and skin cancer. Light therapy is UV free and completely safe.

Consider the benefits:

  • Completely natural and affordable

  • No drugs and no side-effects

  • Safe and painless for all ages

  • Requires only 15 minutes each day

  • You can treat your whole body by yourself
People who suffer from back acne may benefit immensely from light therapy. The back cannot be easily reached to apply topical treatments and some people are too embarrassed to ask for help. Light therapy eliminates this dilemma.

Chromotherapy is a fast growing natural health alternative based on the importance and use of color for human health and happiness. As an effective acne treatment, it is safe, it is natural and - it works!

Some Healthy Ways to Fight Acne

Acne is a major concern for most of the teenagers. It not only manifests physically but also leaves a deep emotional impact. Acne Vulgaris occurs when the pores of the skin become clogged with sebum, bacteria and dead cells. This usually occurs in adolescents and young adults as the hormonal changes in the body trigger the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum. Speaking of emotional issues, the self- image is at risk in most of the cases. The person may feel shameful about the acne and start feeling bad about their own self and the way they look. Teenagers should understand their vulnerability and fight acne and the emotional issues associated with it in a healthy manner. Parents should also be supportive and make their teenager feel good about what he or she is.

Here are some of the healthy ways of fighting acne. Cleanliness is the first and foremost thing one with acne has to practice. Washing the hands and face five to eight times a day with mild soap will reduce bacteria on the skin surface and remove excess oil and dead cells from the skin. This will help prevent acne to a great extent. It is also essential to keep your hands and nails away from your face. Never try to squeeze acne or pull it out with your nails. It will not only worsen the acne but also leave a permanent mark. The skin also needs good nourishment to stay healthy. Eating good food, cutting out the grease from food and drinking plenty of water will help maintain a beautiful skin. Skin is nourished during sleep. Therefore good rest is necessary to maintain a healthy skin. Regular physical exercises are also essential for healthy skin as it improves blood circulation thus bringing more oxygen to the skin. Practicing relaxation techniques like meditation and yoga also helps in most cases with acne. It is important to practice the above tips everyday.

There are so many proven treatment options for acne both topical and systemic. Talking to someone with the same problem will help deal with the emotional issues to a great extent. Mutual counseling and exchange of tips help you feel good. Also, it should not be forgotten that acne is something that will vanish with time and age. However, if the person is severely depressed, it is advisable to seek professional help immediately before you do more harm to your self image. Building a positive self image and self concept is the main goal of psychological counseling when dealing with acne. The counselor will work with you and help you help yourself.

However taking good personal care and appropriate treatment would prevent damage to your physical and emotional self.

How To Judge Health From A Palm

Palmtherapy is the powerful science of rapidly relieving emotional suffering and enhancing an individual?s optimum potential through the hand-brain-mind connection. Palmtherapy seeks to promote success and fulfillment in all areas of life through (touch and non-touch) stimulation of various lines and areas in the palm of the hand. These lines are said to represent the energy pathways of the various characteristics that the individual possesses.

The mind always resists change. The stimulation that takes place through palm therapy is supposed to bypass the disapproval and resistance of the cognitive mind towards change. Thus it leads to rapid changes in behavior, mood, thinking patterns and personality. Eventually, there is a change in one?s life itself. Some of the startling effects of Palmtherapy include rapid release from anxiety, phobias, anger and grief. Palmtherapy helps to take control of thoughts thereby promoting positive thinking, self-esteem, will power and mental clarity. The process of initiating change through Palmtherapy is done without strain of any kind and can be done anytime, anywhere.

Palmtherapy was invented in 1985 by Moshe Zwang, a professor of alternative medicine. In April, 2000 Moshe Zwang?s work Palm Therapy was selected as one of the three great landmarks in the field of hand analysis. Moshe Zwang?s hypothesis showed that the hand, although quite small in size, has a large area of representation in the human brain. This hypothesis shows that since the hand represents activities of the brain, it is possible to affect the brain through the stimulation of specific lines and areas on the hand which are related to specific traits and emotions. The best part was that this hypothesis was backed by a number of positive results which proved beyond doubt that Palmtherapy does work.

According to Moshe Zwang,? The human hand is like the keyboard of a computer. If you know where to stimulate, you can achieve anticipated results.?

Although Palmtherapy has indeed shown rapid results, it is to be noted that it is NOT a substitute for psychotherapy or medical treatment.

How effective is Palmtherapy and how long does it take to show results? The irony is that the more radical a problem, the more radical the shift in behavior is. For instance, in case of anger, grief or phobias, if the right area of stimulation is spotted, it only takes about 10-20 minutes to feel a change. The speed with which the effect is felt varies from person to person. In some cases, it may take up to 3-5 sessions to desensitize a negative trait. Each session begins with the observation of the hand and identification of areas that need to be stimulated.

What is most amazing is that once people experience the almost miraculous effect of Palmtherapy, they choose to continue with the therapy even in other aspects of their lives that lead to success and fulfillment. Thus a consistent practice of Palmtherapy enables a person to reshape his personality and life itself. Considering that most of us struggle to get through small issues in life and mostly fail in overcoming even a single issue, Palmtherapy is certainly a powerful tool.

An Acne Treatment Regime for Adults and Teens

Perhaps the most important acne treatment regime is consistency! No matter what treatment is chosen there is one sure way to make it fail and that is inconsistent or improper use.

Not all acne products have good use instructions. When the product is not part of a larger kit it probably only has sketchy use information. There needs to be a better long term use beauty regime in place in order to reap full benefit from the products chosen.

When choosing over-the-counter products there are only four choices of active acne fighting ingredients which can be utilized with full FDA approval. Those ingredients are often used in about the same order as part of an acne fighting regime.

The first of those ingredients is salicylic acid. This is frequently used in soaps and cleansers as the first step in a twice daily treatment regime. The second is benzoyl peroxide which serves as an antibacterial and oil eliminator. The third is resorcinol and/or sulfur often used in combination as a leave on peeling agent.

Although theses ingredients recur in many different forms and under many different brand names there is a great variation in the percentage of each used. This is particularly true in the case of benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid.

Higher percentages of benzoyl peroxide will yield good results on cystic torso acne. The same strength will cause excessive reddening and drying or blistering of facial skin particularly in babies or the middle aged.

The same situation exists with salicylic acid. A low 2% concentration of this ingredient will cause slow peeling of outer skin layers and eventual loosening of clogged pores. The higher percentages at up to 35% will yield deep pore cleaning but would not be suitable for daily use. An acne treatment regime needs careful planning.

Acne Scar Treatment

There are several types of acne scar treatment that can be used either to remove the scars or as part of an overall skin rejuvenation process.

When deciding on a treatment for any type of acne scar, it is essential to have a dermatologist or a dermatological surgeon to find out what would the best way to achieve the outcome you want.

For some persons, acne scars can be a constant reminder of a condition that used to be subject of mockery, embarrassement or social isolation. They can also be a significant factor within an appearance of premature aging. However, there's no reason to endure them.

Fortunately, nowadays there's a wide range of complex acne scar treatments that can treat most of these problems.

Here are the most widely used acne scar treatments:

* Chemical peels

* Laser treatment

* Dermabrasion

* Intralesional steroid injection (keloids)

* Soft-tissue augmentation

* Skin Surgery

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels can be used for small and depressed scars and some larger scars. Generally they will be one of the cheaper forms of acne scar treatment. Chemical peels are also effective in improving scars left from comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), but are not for ice-pick or deep-fibrotic scars or keloids. Deeper or larger scars may even be reduced by repeated chemical peels.

Laser Treatment

Laser treatment is a new, but highly effective technique for dealing with acne scars.

Depending on the specifics of the procedure, it can be very expensive so it is wise to speak extensively to your dermatologist to find out whether this is the right procedure for you.

It reaches deeper skin layers than other procedures. The different laser varying in energy and tissue penetration can be used for treating complex scars. For example, a deep tissue penetration laser can be used to remodel irregular scarring, while an infrared beam laser will tighten collagen fibers and elevate depressed scars.

Dermabrasion

This technique was developed specifically for acne scar treatment and is still used on a large scale having become very popular. It reaches deeper skin layers than a chemical peel and can be used for both deeper and hypertrophic scar treatment. Nowadays, unlike previously, even many ice-pick scars can be treated using a combination of dermabrasion and

punch excision of the scar tissue.

Intralesional Steroid Injection (Keloids)

This method can sometimes prove effective in improving keloid scars. Steroids are injected directly into the keloid and sometimes combined with surgery in order to reduce the size of the scars. However, this acne scar treatment should be use with high precaution and only on carefully selected patients, as it doesn't have the same results for everyone.

Soft tissue augmentation

This acne scar treatment consists of injecting subcutaneous collagen or fat under the scar to bring its surface even with the surface of the skin that surrounds it. Cosmetically it can provide good results correcting some atrophic (tissue loss) scars. It often needs to be repeated on a regular basis.

Skin surgery

Skin surgery is used for treating ice-pick scars. It is one of the only ways this type of scar can be treated. This acne scar treatment consists of removing each scar individually by punch excision. The scar is excised down to the subcutaneous fat layer and the resulting hole is afterwards repaired using sutures or small skin graft. Subcision is procedure which uses a surgical probe to lift the scar tissue away from unscarred skin and elevate depressed scars. As you can imagine this is a complex surgical procedure and can be cumbersome and scary for the potential patient.

Home Remedies From Parsnip

The parsnip has been cultivated in Europe for centuries. It was especially popular before the arrival of the potato and was used as a valuable source of carbohydrate.

Parsnips contain natural sugars which impart a sweet taste to the vegetable. The Elizabethans used parsnips as a sweetmeat with honey and spices as well as serving the root as a vegetable. The carbohydrate in parsnips is stored in the form of natural sugars. This contrasts with the potato where the carbohydrate is 90% starch. Parsnips are considered sweeter than carrots. With almost three quarters of the sugar in parsnips as sucrose, the sugar we extract from sugar cane. By comparison, sucrose accounts for only one third of the sugar in carrots. Sucrose is not at all damaging to health when consumed in its natural form in its parent plant.

Culpeper (1653) writes that 'the garden parsnip nourisheth much and is good and wholesome, but a little windy whereby it is thought to procure bodily lust; but it fatteneth the body if much used. it is good for the stomach and reins (kidneys) and provoketh urine?.

Today we appreciate that the parsnip is not fattening, with a mere 20Kcal per 100g. Compare this to fats and oils at around 900Kcal per 100g.

Natural Mineral Makeup 3 Reasons Why It Should Be Your Natural Summer Sun Protection

Mineral Makeup is the natural solution for any person looking for natural sunscreen this summer. Especially if you are looking for a gentle and safe sunscreen. Then look no further than your makeup bag for fabulous looking results and full spectrum sun protection.

Here are the top 3 reasons why mineral makeup should be your sunscreen of choice:

1. The two principal ingredients in mineral makeup are natural sunscreens, giving full range UVA and UVB sun protection.

Zinc oxide is the top ingredient in mineral makeup. Because it absorbs both UVA and UVB rays of ultraviolet light very effectively it is the most widely used ingredient in sunscreen products. This mineral helps protect against sunburn and other damage to the skin caused by ultra violet light.

Titanium dioxide is also widely used as a sunscreen. Because of it's brightness and very high refractive index, next only to diamonds in brightness, this mineral, added to mineral makeup gives your face a radiant glow.

2. Mineral Makeup helps fight acne. And that is very good news if you want to wear makeup out doors in the hot summer. If you have acne, then you probably know that wearing makeup and cosmetics when you are going to be sweating only aggravates and worsens your acne.

Mineral makeup is your solution. It is inorganic, and repels bacteria feeding moisture from entering your pores, yet the minerals are ground so that they lay weightlessly on your skin and do not clog the pores.

3. Mineral Makeup does not meltoff your face when you sweat. Because it contains titanium dioxide, which turns the extra moisture into a strong steralizer, the moisture cannot be absorbed by the minerals and thus the makeup will not move or run off in the hot summer sun. This makeup stays put.

The steralizing effects of the makeup also give it a powerful punch in the acne fighting department. No wonder dermatologists love it, and call it the skin care makeup.

Acne Puberty and Girlfriends

An inflammatory disease of the skin, acne, comes about due to changes in the skin structure, that consisty of hair follicle and their sebaceous glands. Commong during puberty, acne, is the bodies response to changing testosterone hormones. Because of the randomness of the bodies response, acne for most people will come and go, and in most cases will completely dissappear over time. This time length is different for every individual, but is usually early twenties. There is now way for medical professionals to predict the acne timeline for an individual. Some individuals will even be affected by acne several users later, in their thirties and forties.

Although acne is not a very pleasant condition to have, due to the large array of people that it affects at some point in their life, it has become somewhat socially acceptable if kept under control. Common Acne is the most wide spread form of acne, which is as a result of naturally occurring dead skin cells blocking the hair follicles while an excessive of oil is secreted from the skin glands. Oil that is blocked under the skin builds up, and provides the perfect environment for bacteria to uncontrolably multiply. The Part of the Infection that we are used to seeing is the visible lesion that becomes visable as the skin inflames. Most individuals are only affected with acne on their face, but it should be noted that acne can affect the chest, back, shoulders, among other areas of the body as well.

Generally, acne doesn't cause any long term medical implications. If Acne lesions are out of control, they can however, leave scars as the skin has been permanently damaged. Acne is more generally associated with social implications such as low self-esteem. Adolescence is a hard stage of life for most individuals, and the persistance of acne with our social agendas doesn't make it any easier.

Top Aerobic Exercises

We all need a little exercise in our lives, should it be for weight or for overall health. Here are the best types of aerobic activity for fat loss:

Running/jogging outdoors - running or jogging is a fantastic cardiovascular exercise and one of the best when it comes to fat loss. One of the advantages is that you don't need any machines when doing this aerobic exercise. Most beginners would be better off by starting with only jogging, because when your body is not used to high intensity aerobic exercises, it can lead to an injuries.

Walking - walking is a perfect exercise for beginners if they're just starting a fat burning program. Walking is very natural, meaning everyone can walk and doesn't tire the body too quickly. The only drawback is that even if you walk for 30-60 minutes, it won't really burn many calories unless you walk at a fast pace.

Treadmill - just like running/jogging outdoors, it can also be done indoors. This is a big advantage to people who have cold climates and cannot run/job outside all year long. Because of all the advances in technologies, treadmills now have a lower injury potential so it's much easier on your feet and legs.

Stationary Bicycle - stationary bicycles come in different forms, the two most popular ones are stationary upright bicycles and stationary recumbent bicycle. The upright bicycles provide different preprogrammed courses which help people keep the same intensity throughout the workout. Most of them have multiple difficulty levels and built-in heart rate monitors. The recumbent bicycle is very similar to the upright one, but because the lower back is supported, it's much more comfortable.

Outdoor cycling - not as good as stationary bicycling because people can cheat by letting gravity do all the work. But a lot of people enjoy mountain biking and cross-country cycling, so they'd prefer to ride their bikes outdoors. In order for outdoor cycling to have a fat burning effect, you must maintain a steady pace or else it won't be that effective.

Elliptical machine - these machines first became popular in 1995. Lots of major fitness companies started making their own version of the elliptical machine. It's like a combination of hiking, cycling and walking all in one, which is what give it its excellent fat burning potential. And because it's a very fun exercise to do, people tend to report that it's much easier to for them to complete then other exercise at the same intensity.

Rowing machine - many people consider the rowing machine to be the most total aerobic exercise because it works all the major muscle groups in the body through a wide range of motion. The advantage to this is that it burns a lot of calories which helps burn more fat, but it can also be very fatiguing for people to maintain a sustained long enough workouts.

Stairclimbers - these aerobic exercises not only provide an intense fat burning workout, but they also effectively target the hamstrings, glutes, quadriceps and calves. They come with many difficulty levels and workout programs. Unless you feel some knee pain, this one's a very high calorie burning exercise.

Arthritis: Benefits of a Natural Approach

It is not uncommon for an arthritis sufferer to have varying degrees of more than one type of arthritis. Regardless of the type of arthritis, the end result is pain and inflammation at the sight of affliction. This fact has led to the popularity of over-the-counter and prescription medications to combat inflammation, and thus diminish pain. Medicines such as aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs come with long term side effects, including a worsening of the arthritic condition. They work by interfering with hormone-like compounds called prostaglandins.

For decades, medical researchers, including those with the Arthritis Foundation itself, refused to acknowledge that diet, nutrition, and allergies could play a role in immune function and arthritis. Today however, studies have shown that arthritis can be reversible, and in some cases, curable with proper diet, supplements, and lifestyle changes. These changes can not only relieve the inflammation and pain but stop degeneration and rejuvenate the affected joints.

Unlike toxic drugs, natural therapies and diet modification can often provide relief from chronic inflammation and pain. One of the most compelling reasons for using natural therapies in arthritic conditions is that while some drugs can cause cartilage destruction, natural therapies correct the underlying factors involved in arthritic cartilage degeneration. Natural therapies have been shown to perform by the following mechanisms:

  • Attracting water to the cartilage locations to enhance synovial lubrication.

  • Inhibiting COX-2 (enzyme responsible for prostaglandins and inflammation)

  • Suppressing cartilage-destroying enzymes, collagenase and phospholipase

  • Suppressing TNF-alpha, IL-1b, and IL-6 (cytokines, responsible for systemic inflammation and hypersensitivity)

  • Inhibiting the formation of PE2 (inflammatory compound)

  • Promoting the synthesis of proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans in the joints

  • Reducing production of LTB4 (facilitates IL-1b and IL-6)

The principle keys for treating and preventing arthritis is proper diet and nutrition, detoxification, stress reduction and exercise. As it is with most programs, there is no single treatment that is right for everyone. Since there are different forms of arthritis, there is not a single prescription that will help all sufferers. The treatment needs to be tailored to fit the individual. It is for this reason that we would like to provide the different modalities that are available and that have had great success with arthritis.

Mesothelioma and the Asbestos Time Bomb

The one-time friend turned killer that was once such an indispensible, yet unnoticed, part of our daily lives for so many centuries, is now a feared enemy. It is Asbestos (from the Greek for 'inextinguishable') and is the reason for thousands of global compensation claims by mesothelioma lawyers against employers, manufacturers and processors of asbestos-related products. Many asbestos workers, and those unwitingly exposed to asbestos, have been given a mesothelioma diagnosis for which there is no cure, maybe just a little temporary relief, until the inevitable distressing death a few months or years after diagnosis.

Mesothelioma is a time bomb because it can be that less than a day's exposure to asbestos dust is enough to produce mesothelioma, some 30-40 years later, when mesothelioma symptoms are first noticed. Though most mesothelioma victims are men, because mainly they worked in those industries, sometimes their wives and family too are innocent sufferers from this disease, inhaling the asbestos dust shaken from their husband's/fathers' clothing, or hair, at the end of the working day.

Whether the fault lies with manufacturers & employers (assuming they knew of the dangers) or the employees (did everyone diligently use respirator equipment and protective clothing, if it was supplied?), is something for the mesothelioma lawyers, insurance companies and courts to thrash out.
Meanwhile, asbestosis & mesothelioma victims are dying a painful and inexorable death, before their cases can even come to court or a settlement is reached. As there is no cure for mesothelioma or asbestosis, all that can be done is to make the sufferer's plight as comfortable as possible, before death finally brings mercyful relief. Although various governments have introduced, albeit belatedly, anti-asbestos legislation, sufferers find that in some cases the time limit for claiming compensation is unrealistically short, given the long time (30-40 years) before mesothelioma symptoms are first noticed. Many victims are dying before they get a court verdict, or even before they get to court. Unlike its Greek derivation, Mesothelioma and asbestosis victims are not inextinguishable.

What is Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a form of cancer in the fluid-filled sac between the Mesothelium lining the lungs, or abdominal cavity or heart, and the body. In a healthy person, the mesothelium secretes a fluid which lubricates these organs, allowing them to expand, contract and easily slide over neighbouring tissues. Fluid in excess of that required for lubrication is removed through the blood & lymph system. In a person with Mesothelioma, the asbestos fibres penetrate the organ, into the fluid sac, producing cancerous cells which attack other cells, thickening the fluid, causing pain, and difficulty with breathing. Peritoneal Mesothelioma and, less commonly, Pericardial Mesothelioma, are not as common as the pleural type, but just as deadly.

The Causes of Pleural Mesothelioma
Pleural Mesothelioma, the most common form of mesiothelioma, is caused, according to all known evidence, exclusively by inhalation of asbestos fibres. These fibres are very thin & sharp enough to penetrate the lining of the lung, entering the plural sac, thereby damaging the mesothelium cells. Often, cancerous growth results, as described above. Other factors also come into play, including the changes induced in macrophages by their ingestion of asbestos particles. The asbestos seems to stimulate the macrophage to produce free radicals, which then affect DNA to induce cancerous cell behaviour. The chances of a person in an asbestos-related environment developing lung cancer, are said to be about 50 times increased if that person smokes, though there is no evidence to show that smoking itself causes mesothelioma. Ironically, one brand of cigarettes in the 1950's used asbestos in the filter tips.

There are other factors too that can play a part, such as heredity, general health and diet. Although not too much has been clincially proven about these factors, as with all diseases, the better the person's health the better their chances of not catching a disease.

The History of Asbestos. It is probably not generally known that asbestos has been around since 4000 BC, when it was used in lamp wicks and candles. Interestingly, it was also used in the cloth wrapping of Egyptian mummies. Maybe this is the real origin of 'The Curse of The Mummy' stories; grave robbers, and maybe Egyptologists, could expect to get their just desserts! Clothing made from asbestos was highly prized in ancient times to wrap the bodies of Kings, so that their ashes would not mix with the earth or other contaminants during cremation, and it is said the Romans simply threw their asbestos napkins into a fire to cleanse and purify them.

Asbestos, a type of silica, is mined from three main types of metamorphic rock:- Chrysotile (white asbestos), Amosite (brown asbestos) and Crocodilite (blue asbestos). Other asbestos bearing rocks such as Tremolite, Anthophyllite and Actinolite are not in such common use but could still be found in some construction work, talcum powders and vermiculite. During the Middle Ages there does not appear to be much evidence of asbestos use; they probably had other problems, like recurring plagues and crusades, to contend with.

The fact that asbestos workers developed respiratory illnesses, and died young, was known as far back as Roman times when Pliny the Elder commented that asbestos workers seemed to have many health problems, advising against buying asbestos-workings slaves as they died young. Obviously, there were no mesothelioma lawyers around then! The deleterious effects of asbestos, in modern industrial times, have been recorded as far back as the start of the 18th Century but little notice was paid by factory owners & Governments to the plight of asbestos workers - labour was cheap and life even cheaper; nothing should stand in the way of the sacred cows of Industrial Progress and the profits of industrialists and politicians.

That it took until the 1970s before more stricter legislation to restrict its use and safeguarded workers was drawn up, is scandalous. A charitable reason for this inertia may be that asbestos had become so widely used in almost every aspect of our everyday lives, delivering such tremendous benefits, that there was such a reluctance to finally admit that something so useful could also be so deadly. People who have expounded the virtues, and made a lot of money out of, asbestos are hardly likely to suddenly throw up their hands and admit to being wrong. The alternative, less charitable, explanation can only be that greed and profit were more important than employees' health.
Deja vu!

There are many ex-asbestos industry workers who are living time bombs, not knowing if the deadly fibres have affected their health. As employers & governments have reluctantly been forced to legislate to compensate workers with Mesothelioma, there needs to be greater awareness of sufferers plight.

Colon Cleaning UV Light a Concept

Colon Cancer is a killer and about the only way to prevent it from killing you early in life is to detect it in the beginning stages in order to treat it. There are many foods you can eat to keep your colon working well and keep out the bad bacteria build up. Eating right and staying away from vices can help you prevent colon cancer. Here is a concept, which may help kill unwanted harmful bacteria in the colon. This idea stems from the new advances and innovations of UV light to clean water. The only problem is how do you get light where the catch phrase says; ?. . . Where the Sun Don?t Shine,? well here is a thought that perhaps some savvy science major, academic or innovative medical entrepreneur might want to look into?

UV Light is being used to kill bacteria in water filtration applications. It works so well many sewer treatment plants are using huge units to clear bacteria out of the water prior to allowing it to re-enter the ground water, river or ocean. Hospitals have also used UV light to kill bacteria; there are indeed so many applications for such technologies. Perhaps we ought to look into a small marble sized battery operated UV light Device. One, which can be ingested to clean out unwanted bacteria in the stomach and potentially prevent cancer as well. The small marble size device will pass thru the entire system into the stool, cleaning as it goes. Then the patient can merely eat some yogurt and other various things to put the good bacteria back into the system. I propose that the marble sized unit UV light flash a the best cycle for good bacteria and/or the worst cycle for bad bacteria. Ranges near or at 5-8 Hz.

There are many super small batteries, which can be used and the unit could be as small as an M & M candy or could be ingested with many of these little guys at a time on a relatively empty stomach. It will clean out the stomach, small intestines, large intestines and the colon using this UV light. It could be a very simple process and very inexpensive. Although it may not sound all too pretty the units could be used over and over again, by washing them in a set of small plastic containers and shaking them up. Similar to the old contact lenses; Saline solution and/or rubbing alcohol and then rinsing, turn them on and re-use or trade back into the doctors office for official service, recharging of batteries and complete sterilization. If you would like a more complete report on my idea, contact me.

What Parents Should Know About Milk Junk Food and Teen Acne

You are what you eat. How can growth occur without food? The food choices many of us make from rising first thing in the morning, through to going back to bed at night, are unhealthy and damaging. Tell you what! Do this. Keep a written record of everything you eat for a 24 hour period. In short, you would be shocked-probably ashamed as well. The march toward teen acne begins the minute our parents place that first glass of cow?s milk on the table before us. Moreover, we exacerbate an already bad situation when we chose to eat junk food.

Let?s face it, cow?s milk is meant for baby cows, not for our baby children. Let me dive right into the problem that I have with cow?s milk. My family does not drink cow?s milk. A few specifics why. After pasteurization, regulators tell us that milk should contain no more than 20,000 bacteria per milliliter. In addition, it shouldn?t have anymore than 10 coli form bacteria in each milliliter. What this boils down to is that, a 10oz. glass of cow?s milk may contain 5 million bacteria and still be acceptable for human consumption. This type of bacteria intake overpowers the gatekeepers to an adult immune system. Paving the way for the unchecked, free movement of other bacteria, acne and viruses that attack the body. Worst of all, if milk wages this type of assault on an adult body, what chance does a child stand or for that matter a teen with a developing immune system?

Let?s suppose that the bacteria in milk does not exist. I know, I know! Work with me, I?m only trying to highlight a point. Let?s jump ahead to coli form bacteria. This bacteria is found in the stool of a cow! Got that! The stool! Need I bang this home anymore? I didn?t think so. In a nutshell, these bacteria ravage the body. Then acne piggybacks, or gets an unhindered ride as a result. Worse still, the regulatory body that sets these standards, anticipates the myriad contaminants in milk! Milk causes excess mucus in the system, thereby slowing things down. It attacks and binds vital organs, unduly taxing them and stressing them out. Additionally, it does a good job in causing ?dirty? or ?unclean? blood. This type of ambush robs the system of its ability to attack invaders. Once forced into a defensive mode, the body becomes prone to the onslaught of acne and other diseases.

Fact is, the external appearance of acne in teens and acne in adults can be compared to a warning shot across the bow. It is truly indicative of an unclean interior, and at this point, intervention is needed. Recently I was in conversation with a friend who is a computer technician. I told him that computers made mistakes. He contends that the problem lies with the people operating the computers. He capped off the discussion by saying, ?garbage in ? garbage out.? Then it hit me, that?s how many of us are with our eating habits. We put garbage in, and when garbage comes out in the form of acne, we are mystified.

Hold that thought! This is going to surprise you. Chocolate cake (which I love), doesn?t cause acne. It doesn?t cause teen acne nor does it cause adult acne. Pizza and soft drinks do not cause acne. However, the cumulative result of years of putting this garbage in, eventually leads to garbage out and many times the garbage on the outside is in the form of teen acne and adult acne.

In sum, a written record may indeed shock us into action, and force us to get a grip on the foods we consume; since we are what we eat.

Ayurvedic Essential Oils for a Healing from Inside

Ayurveda, the Indian stream of medical sciences, is considered to be gifted to people by God himself. Earlier restricted to the ancient scriptures, the science is now being researched upon to find cures to several ailments that afflict people. Ayurvedic essential oils are the pure essences of several herbs and plants that have been identified with medicinal qualities.

Ayurvedic treatment differs from the conventional cures in the sense that it aims at curing the sick rather than the sickness. It is considered that the person as a whole must be treated if one wants to find a potent cure of the sickness. The ayurvedic essential oils help a lot in healing the person from inside.

The herbs and plants used to prepare ayurvedic essential oils are mostly of Indian origin. The ancient scriptures have a mention of the qualities of each of the herb. Moreover, one can find the method of preparing the ayurvedic essential oils to keep the essence of herb intact.

The natural state of the body is considered at equilibrium. A healthy person enjoys equilibrium, wherein doshas, agni (digestive fire), dhatus (tissues), normal functioning of mala (waste products), cheerful state of atman (soul), sensory organs and mind are working well.

Doshas find a special mention in the ayurvedic studies. There are three types of doshas or faults within the body- vata, pitta, and kapha. When the functioning of these three doshas is impaired, then human body takes up diseases.

Vata is identified with the cosmic element of air and ether, which regulates all types of movements. The person with a vata nature is likely to be ill with diseases of the neurological system, particularly the motor functions. Elderly people are more likely to have vata disorders. For the correction of vata dosha, ayurvedic essential oils will be very helpful. The ayurvedic essential oils used will be moist, calming, and warm to successfully cure the disorder. Some of the important essential oils used to treat vata imbalances are bergamont, orange, sandalwood, turmeric, frankincence, vetivert, camphor oils etc. Essential oils clear blocked passages of the body. They are also beneficial to prevent dryness of skin and loss of water in the body tissues.

Another dosha is of the pitta type. Agni or heat forms the primary constituent of pitta. Maintaining body heat is the primary responsibility of pitta. Hence, Pitta is responsible for metabolic process in the organ and tissue systems, in addition to the cellular metabolism. One can identify persons of the pitta type by their sharpness, prompt action and their intellectual capacity. Diseases of the digestive and metabolic systems largely affect the pitta type people, which is visible more during the middle ages. Ayurvedic essential oils that help in treating pitta disorders must have a cooling effect to let excessive heat out of the body. The essential ayurvedic oil must be essentially dry. The ayurvedic essential oils that best suit this type of imbalances are sandalwood, jasmine, lavender, neroli, tea tree oils.

The last type of dosha is kapha. Kapha is made up of earth and water. The body form and structure, inclusive of fluids, fats, muscles, bones etc. come under kapha. Respiratory system is more prone to kapha imbalances, which results into phlegmatic disorders. Such disorders are mostly visible in the children who may complain of chest pain or problems in breathing. Ayurvedic essential oils help healing these disorders. The essential ayurvedic oils used to treat kapha disorders will be opposite to the ones used in pitta disorders. This is because kapha has cold qualities unlike pitta, which is concerned with heat. Therefore, the ayurvedic oils will be light, warm and dry.

Ayurveda aspire to bring the person back to its normal natural state, by facilitating healing from inside. Ayurvedic essential oils further this object of ayurveda by using the pure essence of herbs and plants.

Melanoma Skin Disease and Skin Cancer Treatment ? You Need to Read This

Skin cancer like melanoma is potentially fatal. Hence, it is imperative that skin cancer treatment is begun early. Skin cancer treatment may take on the conventional form or it may be along the lines of alternative medicine. Cancer treatment is progressing rapidly by the day and new treatment methods are in the pipeline.

Conventional skin cancer treatment encompasses a range of methods, like:

Surgery
Surgery is the oldest form of treating skin cancer. This treatment involves the removal of the tumor and some adjacent healthy tissues in order to stem the cancer spread. For some surface-based cancers doctors and surgeons have found skin peels like the TCA skin peel have been very effective (see the link below for more info on TCA peels for home use).

Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy aims at skin cancer treatment by introducing specific cancer-combating drugs in the body. These drugs kill the cancer cells by hampering their development and regeneration. To counter the side effects, chemotherapy is being molded along new lines.

Radiation therapy
Radiation therapy uses x-rays to kill the cancer-causing cells. This therapy can be applied to any part of the body. New radiation techniques like External Beam Radiation aim at focusing the radiation to the cancer cell and away from healthy tissue.

Immunotherapy
Biotherapy or immunotherapy aims at treating skin cancer by enhancing the body?s immune system with doses of tumor vaccines, interleukin-2, or interferon-alfa. It involves fewer side effects than other methods.

Hyperthermia
The cancer cell is known to be sensitive to heat. Local hyperthermia is one method of cancer treatment where the whole body or the concerned area is subject to high temperatures to destroy or weaken cancer cells.

Photodynamic Therapy
A relatively new cancer treatment, Photodynamic Therapy, involves the injection of Photofrin so that when the cancer cell is subject to a laser beam, the drug is triggered into action. This treatment is relatively painless and entails less risks and side effects than other treatment forms.

Steering clear of these harsh methods are the alternative forms of cancer treatment like:

Nutritional Therapy
Here the cancer patient is put on an individualized diet in accordance with the specific dietary preferences and requirements to counter the ravages wrought by the disease and the treatment.

Pain management
Pain management aims to alleviate pain and distress either through drugs, surgery or psychotherapy.

Naturopathy
It is ?back to nature? in the realm of cancer treatment, with natural therapy. Naturopathy is an herbal treatment, which furthers your body?s innate ability to heal itself, combining a range of processes.

Psychoneuroimmunology
Another new form of cancer treatment is Psychoneuroimmunology. It believes that mind can wield enough control over the body to stimulate a healing process. Thus, this form of treatment engulfs a range of nutritional and medical issues to aid during the bodily healing and emotional and cognitive therapies like stress management and humor sessions to empower the mind.

Spiritual Support Therapy
Another popular form of skin cancer treatment is Spiritual Support Therapy, which takes care of the patient?s spiritual well being and a regimen of exercises and massages that forms the Physical Therapy, designed to abate stress and pain.

Skin cancer treatment is most effective when cancer is diagnosed early and the physician embarks on the best form of treatment.

Pustules and Pimples the Plaque of Puberty!

At one point or another in a person's life, they can be prone to Acne! Although adult acne treatments are common, you are more susceptible to acne when you are in your teenage years. It affects people from ages 10 through 40 and up, and can appear as blackheads, whiteheads, congested pores, pimples, pustules, or cysts, which are considered to be deep pimples. If you understand the reason for acne, you could do a lot for it when it comes to acne skin care. Acne occurs mainly on the face, chest or back and is commonly referred to in slang, as zits. If you are looking for an acne treatment, it is important to learn a bit about your problem before approaching the drugstore or cosmetic counter. In severe cases, you are advised to visit a dermatologist.

There is no one factor that causes acne. Usually, severe acne is found in people with poor personal hygiene or a hormonal imbalance. Acne happens when the sebaceous glands come to life around puberty and are stimulated by male hormones that are produced in the adrenal glands of both girls and boys. The glands that produce the oil lubricate and protect the skin. At this point in time, it is a good idea to find a good acne treatment.

When the cells that are close to the openings in the oil glands get blocked they cause a buildup of oil underneath the skin. Since bacteria lives in everyone's skin, it likes to feast on this oil and multiply, causing the surrounding tissues to become inflamed. Commonly referred to as pimples or whiteheads, when the oil becomes oxidized or changes from white to black, it is called a blackhead. Remember to look after your acne daily and practice good personal hygiene. Also, visit your dermatologist as your best acne treatments are usually found or recommended by them.

Birth Control Pills Pregnancy and Acne A Complete HowTo Guide

Acne first comes about during adolescence, when hormone levels begin to increase. This sudden flucturation of hormones causes the sebaceous glands to go into overdrive. They start generating increased levels of such oils that end up becoming clogged inside the glands. When the oils can't escape, acne results!

So it goes without saying that when there is a fluctuation in the hormone levels within the body, it can trigger an increase in sebaceous oil production, and therefore increases the chance that an outbreak of acne will likely occur. With women, acne breakouts are common while they are taking birth control pills and also when they become pregnant.

Using Birth Control Pills to Control Acne

Women who do take the birth control pill and who notice that their acne is getting worse should discuss the situation with their doctor. Different types of oral contraception have differing levels of hormones and one side effect of some contraception is an increase in acne. Switching to another brand may bring acne back under control.

Any woman who is healthy, and is at least age 15, who has begun menstruating and who has decided to start using oral contraception can discuss getting a prescription for a birth control pill with their doctor. There are several brands that help clear up acne but only one so far has been approved by the FDA for treatment of acne and that is Ortho Tri-cyclen.

It is important to note that taking the birth control pill as a way to treat acne should be the last alternative, after all other acne treatment options have been attempted without success. The birth control pill does have side effects and it must be taken exactly as prescribed to be effective.

Acne During Pregnancy

Women who have become pregnant often report an increase in acne, too. Many changes occur within a woman's body in an effort to properly prepare the body for the growing fetus. The two primary female hormones at work in every woman's body are progesterone and estrogen. Progesterone is more androgenic than estrogen, which basically means it is more like the hormones found in men. Increased progesterone during pregnancy can cause the sebaceous glands to produce more sebaceous oils than normal and that is what can cause outbreaks of acne.

If possible, the best way to handle acne during pregnancy is to realize that it is a short-term problem that will usually go away once the baby is born. If this isn't possible, discuss your options over with a dermatologist who has experience working with patients during their pregnancy. After going through your situation, the dermatologist will be able to suggest treatment options that'll make you happier with your appearance and that won't harm your baby.

You've Got to Be You ? You Are an Individual in Sickness and in All Types of Health Care

Many people turn to alternative medicine because of wanting their provider to see them as a unique individual. Yet, the reality is that individualization matters in both conventional and alternative health care.

One of the poorly-understood problems with applying the findings from conventional medical research studies is that the findings reflect group averages, not information about individual patients. It really isn?t possible to know if the statistics apply to you or not.

Interestingly, a prominent academic geneticist from Duke University and reportedly worldwide vice-president of genetics at a leading pharmaceutical company was quoted as saying the following:

The vast majority of drugs ? more than 90 per cent ? only work in 30 or 50 percent of the people... I wouldn't say that most drugs don't work. I would say that most drugs work in 30 to 50 percent of people. Drugs out there on the market work, but they don't work in everybody.

What are conventional medical researchers doing about this alarming situation? They are starting to look at our individual genetic patterns to determine which drugs are most likely to help which people. Right now, the reality is that medical doctors have to use trial-and-error decision-making to choose the next drug option. So, it is coming full circle. Conventional medicine is recognizing the need to individualize treatment for different people with the same diagnosis. And they are working towards developing methods to do so for their primary therapeutic tool, drugs.

One of the strengths of many alternative medicine approaches is that they already individualize ? and they don?t need genetic tests to do so. They can use information that they can get from interviewing, observing, and examining the patient. Established alternative medicine systems such as acupuncture, classical homeopathy, and Ayurveda, have systems for evaluating the person as a whole to determine the optimal interventions in an individualized way.

The potential advantage of alternative medicine individualization over genetics tests is that the systems of care are well developed already. They don't rely on extensive and hard-to-get laboratory tests that are still in mostly research stages and that, in the end, may only tell the doctor how a person might respond to a specific drug for a specific problem in a specific body part. Although there are definitely situations when conventional medication is the way to go, the alternative health care systems can address health problems of the individual person now. The goals are to improve the well-being of the person as a whole, not just a particular body part.

Finally, even when drugs are essential (and many times they are to stay alive), people still want something more than just a treatment for a disease. That is, they want to go beyond merely surviving and reach a state of wellness or even flourishing. Alternative approaches are better suited to help develop that positive dimension of health care.

Are Alternative Medicines Effective?

A growing number of people have become interested in alternative medicine to treat illnesses. Alternative medicine as a practice has created a significant amount of controversy both inside and outside the traditional medical field. Alternative medicine refers to a treatment or substance that is unproven under the application or accepted scientific standards. The most common types of alternative medicine include herbs, supplements, therapies and activities that are outside traditional medical practice. Some of these raise questions about their safety and effectiveness.

Acupuncture, massage, meditation, herbal tea, and plant extracts are popular among devotees of alternative medicine, but many traditional doctors believe these treatments are ineffective or even dangerous. Alternative medicine has become increasingly popular as more people face the aches, pains, and illnesses that accompany aging. In some cases, individuals have not obtained a cure with traditional medical approaches and turn to other options to treat their illness. In still other cases, people feel very strongly that natural methods of treatment are better than traditional medicine, so they look for answers from alternative practitioners instead of the family doctor.

There are risks associated with alternative medicine. Some of the risks arise through the use of untested, ineffective, and even unsafe substances. The manufacturers of these substances sometimes exaggerate the claims of their effectiveness. They may misrepresent the science related to the material to convince consumers to buy the product, even if its use can endanger a person?s health.

Some herbal remedies are advertised as being able to improve memory, raise metabolism, or cure cancer and heart disease. In reality, the remedies may cause harm if taken at high doses. Another risk is that someone with a serious disease like cancer will not receive traditional and proven treatments, preferring to use alternative methods that may not be effective. In these cases, people are risking their lives. Sometimes, patients may be using alternative treatments, but not telling their doctors about them. This can lead to dangerous drug interactions. If a traditional doctor is unaware of the substance a patient is taking, medications that produce harmful interactions may be unknowingly prescribed.

It is possible to recognize potentially risky alternative treatment. If a treatment sounds too good to be true, it probably is. While this is a clich?, it is often very true in situations involving alternative medicines. Be careful of products labelled ?miraculous? or ?ancient remedy.? If you are thinking about treatments such as acupuncture or reflexology, check the qualifications of the practitioner before being treated. Ask about the training received, and research the treatment to determine if it has been scientifically tested and found to be effective.

It?s a good idea to ask your doctor about an alternative treatment you are considering. Trained medical professionals have the experience and education to help you make safe decisions about your health.

A Viral Infection Might Lead To Prostate Cancer

Recent researches targeting prostate cancer have associated the prostate cancer development with the presence of a newly identified virus called XMRAV. According to study conclusion the XMRV was identified as an infectious agent in humans and closely related to a virus that causes leukemia in mice.

The findings are based of screening prostate tumor samples from 85 men with prostatectomy with a DNA ViroChip containing the genetic sequences of about 5,000 human viruses. The researches confirmed the possibility that a viral infection might lead to prostate cancer developing in men.

XMRV could be transmitted trough sexual activity. Then it is possible that XMRV to cause an infection able to lead to chronic inflammation of the prostate. In a way similar human papillomavirus (HPV) can trigger cervical cancer, this chronic inflammation caused by XMRV could result in prostate cancer.

This could be the first time an evidence is produced that a virus is related to prostate cancer development.

The research team conclusion suggests that more research is needed to confirm their findings. The good news seems to be the fact that if prostate cancer is caused by a virus such as XMRV, then its action can be cancelled using special targeted drugs or vaccine. The use of condom could be also a way to prevent XMRV sexual transmission.

Mesothelioma Doctors

Mesothelioma is not easy for doctors to diagnose. Although humankind has witnessed tremendous advances in medical diagnosis technologies and techniques, mesothelioma continues to remain a challenge for doctors. Thus, not every doctor can treat this disease. It calls for the service of a special set of doctors who are trained to handle mesothelioma cases.

Being a complex disease, mesothelioma requires several different types of treatment. Seeking the help of specialized doctors, each trained in specific fields or treatment, is the best possible means of treating mesothelioma. Since there are various types of mesothelioma that affect different body parts, it is best if the disease is treated with a team. To begin with, even before a patient is referred to the specialist team, the onus of suspecting the symptoms as related to cancer, such as mesothelioma, lies with the general practitioner.

Once the general practitioner refers the patient, the specialized team decides the future course of action. The first specialist in the team is a pulmonologist who is specially trained to diagnose and treat conditions as well as diseases that are related to lung disorders. This specialist can competently handle cases of pleural mesothelioma, lung cancer, bronchitis, asthma, emphysema, and COPD. The next specialist in line is the thoracic surgeon, who specializes in undertaking surgery of the lungs, amongst others, and can deal with coronary disease, lung and abdominal cancers, and heart and lung surgery.

The medical oncologist is another trained physician who specializes in treating cancer through chemotherapy. Even within oncologists, there are several types of physicians who specialize in treating cancer. In contrast to the medical oncologist is the radiation oncologist, who treats cancer through radiation therapy, and the radiologist, who uses equipment such as x-rays, ultrasound, and scans to diagnose cancer.

An additional group of specialists consists of pathologists who monitor and evaluate changes in the human cells in order to understand the nature of the disease. Using body fluids and excretions, they identify the disease and its intensity. However, unlike other mesothelioma-trained physicians, pathologists do not directly treat patients. Similarly, there are some other specialists who also do not participate directly in the treatment process. These include the social worker and the respiratory therapist.

Emotionally Dealing with Acne

It is a fact that nearly 17 million people in the United States alone currently have acne. Thus, acne is the most common skin disease. However, if so many americans are afflicted with this skin disease, then why is there a social stigma with acne? Due to the ever increasing social and media pressure on americans to become as beautiful as they can be, acne can be a detering blow. If acne is untreated, then it can lead to disfiguration of the skin and permanent scarring affecting self esteem for years to come.

First, acne must not only be treated physically, but emotionally as well. Since acne predominantly affects teens during puberty, which is a stage of generally low self-esteem as the body develops, acne can cause deep emotional scars as well. How does a teen, who is constantly bombarded by media influences telling them that they have to look perfect, accept acne as a common problem that should have no effect on their personal worth? There are several tips that these teens can do that can help overcome acne emotionally.

  • Attend Motivational Summer Camps
  • Join Clubs at School
  • Participate in Sports
  • Develop a Talent
  • Work at a Part-Time Job

These tips help build self-esteem that acne breaks down. For instance, if a teen participates in sports, then not only will they feel that they are part of a group (comradery) but also revel in the accomplishments of the team. A Part-Time job gives the teen a sense of worth, that they can be a valuable part of the work force. The money earned helps gives the teen more self-worth, that they have earned it. If the teen has a natural talent, such as music, the parents can encourage the teen to develop the talent.

Developing a talent not only instills within the teen a healthy work ethic (practice), but seeing the gradual improvement will help boost self-esteem. Perhaps the largest resource that teens can use to overcome the emotional scars of acne is their parents. If parents talked to their teens regularly, and have open conversations with their teen about their acne, then the teen will feel less ashamed of their dilema. Parents can also relate their own experiences with acne, since most americans deal with pimples and zits at least in some point in their life. Parents can also get advice from other parents on how they have helped their teens deal with acne.

On AcneRelief.org there is a forum where both parents and teens can write about their own experiences with acne, and learn from what others have written.

While acne can be devestating for teens during the developmental years of puberty, the worst scarring can be emotional, not physical. Teens should always remember that acne is a common skin disease that affects many americans. If acne is hurting their self-esteem, parents can boost their self-worth by maintaining open conversations with their children and encourage activities such as clubs, sports, and developing talents.

Massaging the Nerves

Massage benefits many nerve problems. In case of acute inflammation of the nerves, massage should be done carefully. Light and gentle stroking are recommended. Deep pressure should not be used on swollen nerves for it will increase the inflammation. All that is needed is just a gentle tapotement or beating of the nerve.

Nerve compression is recommended for soothing nerves. Grasp the limb with both hands, and create firm pressure around and down the arm. Start with the shoulder and proceed down to the wrist. As you leave the grip, bring the hands down a little and make another pressure. As a result, blood circulation will increase. Spinal nerve compression is extremely beneficial. It is done by the palm of the hand. Vibration of the fingers stimulate it.

Sleeplessness can be cured by long slow and gentle stroking down the spine and entire back.

How To Do A Pedicure

If you are accustomed to wearing nail polish, remove this first. If your remover is alcohol or acetone free, it may not be as effective on darker colors. Also, some people prefer to use gauze pads as opposed to cotton balls to avoid any fuzz leftover on the nails. But if your ball is wet enough and wiped well, this shouldn't be a problem.

Next, cut your nails, using a proper toenail cutter and not a fingernail clipper. The toe clippers are made specifically for the nature and shape of foot nails. Cut straight across, leaving one-eighth to one-quarter of an inch, depending on the shape of your toe. Nails can then be filed down with the rough side of an emery board, the corners shaped, and the smooth side of the board used to buff the edges.

Use a bowl, or dishpan from the Dollar Store as a footbath. Soak your feet in warm water for 15 minutes. For a more relaxing session, add some aromatherapy oils or crystals to the water. The soaking will help soften skin that you will be working with next.

Use a cuticle softener around the edges of each nail, and then an orangewood stick to gently push back any skin extending over the nail. Go only to the edge of the nail and no further. If you have a piece of loose skin, there are cuticle clippers that will remove it.

The ball and heels of your feet is where the toughest and roughest skin is. Use a scrub meant for removing dry skin, and put it on a pumice stone or foot scrubber. Rub firmly in order to get the softened dead skin off, but don't go so far that you irritate the foot.

Now indulge yourself by moisturizing while you massage your feet. There are creams made specifically for foot skin, which will condition it better. Rub and massage it into all areas of the foot, especially the thicker skin portions, and then continue up the ankle to the lower calf. You might also like to use a drop of cuticle oil, massaged in to keep them soft and pliable.

Allow your feet to dry thoroughly before putting on any kind of footwear, or re-painting the nails with polish.

Homemade Acne Treatments Are They Really Working?

Treatments for acne can begin from your kitchen. There are several vegetables and fruits which can be used to cure acne.

Most people are not convinced about the effectiveness of the homemade acne treatments. But if you check the ingredients of popular medicines for acne you will find that most of them consist of substances found in common vegetables and fruits. Acne is the result of the lack of vital vitamins like Vitamin E, Vitamin A and Pantothenic Acid. Deficiency in these vitamins leads to the growth of bacteria that clogs the skin oil. This in turn leads to acne. Most of the medicines try to replenish the essential vitamins, which can be easily got by filling your diet with vegetable and fruits containing those vitamins.

Keeping the skin clean is an important part in the acne treatment. Cleaning the skin with lemon is an effective acne treatment. Lemon is used for several purposes mainly due to the presence of citric acid. The citric acid has several essential properties required to kill the harmful bacteria. Rub lemon on your skin before going to sleep and you will find a clear skin in the morning. Similarly, you can get rid of acne scars by applying tomato slice. Applying garlic on the spots is another effective homemade acne treatment. Mint juice also can remove skin lesions and scars.

Other homemade acne treatments include applying the paste of orange peels. This paste cleans the skin and fights harmful bacteria. Application of raw papayas can also bring relief to acne. Daily application of tea tree oil, coconut oil, lavender oil and jojoba oil before bathing for an hour can reduce acne. Including large amount of fruits and vegetables in the diet and drinking lot of water are part of acne treatment.

The success of homemade acne treatments depends on the dedication shown by the person. Simply rubbing lemon or tomato for a day will not cure acne. All home made acne treatments should be strictly followed for over a period of time.

Plastic Surgery Procedures

There are many different plastic surgery procedures available to those who would like to alter certain aspects of their bodies. Plastic surgery has been around in some form or another for many years, but has only been in extensive use in the 20th and 21st century. The top three cosmetic surgical procedures in 2004 Liposuction (325,000); nose reshaping (305,000); and breast augmentation (264,000. In addition to these procedures there are many other options for other areas of the body. In this article I plan to explore some of those cosmetic surgery options and give background information on those procedures as well. These numbers clearly show an increasing trend to have cosmetic surgery procedures performed for aesthetic, as well as reconstructive reasons.

We?ll start by exploring the number one plastic surgery procedure, Liposuction. In the last year alone, 325,000 Liposuction procedures were performed on both men and women of all ages and race. Liposuction is a procedure that can help to sculpt the body by removing unwanted fat from specific areas, including the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, cheeks, neck, chin and upper arms. Liposuction is not a substitute for regular good diet practices or exercise but rather a further refinement in addition to diet and exercise. Recently a number of new techniques in liposuction have been developed, including the ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty (UAL), the tumescent technique, and the super-wet technique. These new procedures are helping many plastic surgeons to provide their patients with more precise results and quicker recovery times. Not all patients will be able to use the newest techniques but your doctor can discuss which techniques are the best for you based upon your medical history and various other factors.

Liposuction is best performed on Normal weight individuals with firm, elastic skin who have excess fat in certain areas of their body. Liposuction carries a greater risk for people with medical problems such as poor circulation, severe lung or heart disease, diabetes, as well as some other conditions not listed. It is always best to let your doctor know your full medical history so that he can accurately assess the correct procedures for your body as well as safely and effectively treat you. In your first consultation, your plastic surgeon will most likely evaluate your health, determine where your fat deposits lie and the elasticity of your skin, and develop a plan that is right for you and your body.

Rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping, is another commonly performed technique in which the nose is reshaped, altered, or straightened for both reconstructive and aesthetic reasons. This procedure is often used to correct breathing problems in the nasal region as well. There are two options for the incision in this type of plastic surgery, There is open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty. Open rhinoplasty is performed by making a small incision across the columella, between the nostrils, in addition to incisions on the inside of your nose.

This surgery is often performed in the most complicated cases. In the case of closed rhinoplasty the incision is inside of the nose helping to promote a speedier recovery as well as reducing the amount of swelling. Rhinoplasty can change the shape of your nose by recontouring the underlying cartilage and bone into the desired shape. Plastic surgeons today have the ability to make your nose shorter, longer, thinner, and straighter. Most of the incision in nasal surgery are made internally so there is no visual scarring on the exterior nasal cavity. Healing times vary with the type of incision but healing from nasal plastic surgery generally occurs within a few weeks after surgery.

Breast augmentation cosmetic surgery is another very popular procedure and one that has been widely publicized by women around the world. Breast augmentation is surgery to enhance the size or shape of a woman?s breast for reconstructive or aesthetic reasons. Some of these reasons include, but are not limited to, enhancing the size of the breast for a woman who feels that hers are too small, correcting a difference in breast size, reconstructing the breast after surgery, and a reduced breast volume after pregnancy.

Breast size can be increased during surgery by the insertion of an implant behind each breast and can effectively increase the bustline by a cup size or more. All said the best way to know if plastic surgery is for you is to get as much information on the procedure as possible before you make a decision. After all you can never have too much information when it comes to your body, right?

What a Surprise The Cause of Adult Acne is a Mystery!

For many years medical science had no idea what caused adult acne. That's probably because the medical community hadn't noticed that there was such thing as adult acne. It may be difficult to comprehend, but until 1980s there was no such disease - even if about 25% adults are its victims to some degree. As with its teen version, it is difficult to determine the cause of adult acne.

Teen and adult acne

Teen acne has been researched for many years and certainly some information gained during this research can be used to understand the cause of adult acne. It is probable that whatever causes teen acne will also have something to do with the adult version of this disease.

Stress, dehydration, genetic issues or a simple hormonal imbalance?

The problem is that there are many conflicting theories concerning the causes of adult and teen acne. Almost everything has been blamed: stress, dehydration, having (or not having) sex, improper diet and genetic issues. In the case of teenagers, most of those causes seem to have no connection to acne. However in the case of adults, things aren't that clear.

The immediate cause of adult acne is well-known: hormonal imbalances.

With teenage acne causes are more easily understood. Things are much more complicated with adult acne. Reducing stress, as well as introducing a well balanced diet has little effect on teenagers, but those tactics often work well for grown-ups.

How to heal yourself

The progress of adult acne depends on the immediate cause of the hormonal imbalance. Because it's hard to determine what is the exact cause of adult acne, it is advised to do everything at once - change your diet, reduce stress and (in the case of women) - start using hormonal pills or Vitamin A.

In many cases the recommended pills are known to reduce the number of skin blemishes. This fact strengthens the theory that the cause of adult acne lies in hormonal problems. More importantly it often reduces the effects of acne, no matter what the reason.

Vitamin A helps to achieve the same effect. However only a synthetic analogue of the vitamin, called retinoic acid, has any effect on acne, real Vitamin A is useless.

The problem is that retinoic acid can be obtained only by prescription and hormonal pills are often avoided because of religious or philosophical reasons.

Mark Walters fought acne as a young person and has carried on the battle ever since. He shares his knowledge with others at http://www.AcneRescue.com

The Nutritional Facts Concerning Acne

Acne vulgaris is commonly known as acne and is common among teenagers due to hormonal changes at this stage in life. Too much sebum produce by the sebaceous glands at this time in life blocks up skin pores which makes them get infected. The condition consists of red raised areas of the skin which can develop into pustules (white heads) and even cysts. Common areas of the body that are affected are the back, chest, groin and face. The arms, buttocks, lower trunk and upper legs can also be affected in severe cases.

There is no conclusive evidence that acne is caused by poor nutrition, but poor nutrition could make the symptoms worst. A diet high in fried food and saturated fats can make it easier for pores to be blocked. It would be wise to keep to a whole food diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables and drink plenty of mineral water, at least a litre a day. Eggs, onions and garlic can be beneficial due to the high content of sulphur. It is best to avoid stimulants like sugar and cigarettes. Foods high in essential fatty acids (EFAs) such as oily fish, seeds, nuts and whole-grain cereals are good as they have anti-inflammatory properties. Vitamin A (should be avoid by pregnant women and those planning pregnancy), E, C and Zinc can be beneficial taken in supplements form. Topical application of diluted tea tree oil can also help with acne.

The following supplements may help if you are suffering from Acne.

Antioxidant complex
Multivitamin and multiminerals
Vitamin A (Should be avoid by pregnant women or women planning pregnancy)
Vitamin B3 (Niacin)
Vitamin B6
Vitamin C
Vitamin E
Zinc

Acne Scars Cause Prevention and Treatment

Acne affects as much as 80% of teenagers and others in their early twenties, while most get out with only a few minor acne scars, some even without any at all; there is also a notable percentage that suffers from acne scars.

There are two types of skin problems caused by acne that can be recognized as acne scars, one is the red pigmentation that appears after acne has healed. These contrary to popular belief, are not scars, rather, these are post-inflammatory lesions which occurs as the acne heals, and these can be present for up to 6-12 months. If however the pigmentation that you see lasts longer than the said period, you may be facing acne scars.

Acne scars come from connective tissue that the body uses to repair damage done to a certain area. Together with antibodies and white blood cells, they work together to heal the wound. After the healing process, you are left with a scar.

Acne scars can develop as long as acne is present, so one good form of prevention is actually preventing acne. However, Acne scars can also be prevented even with the presence of acne. This is done by facilitating the healing of the acne, the faster it heals, the shallower the acne scar will be, making it easier to treat, or may need no treatment at all.

There are two dermatologically tested ways to facilitate the healing of acne, one is the use of Tretinoin, it?s a form of vitamin A, which speeds up the skin?s healing and renovation process shortening the inflammation period, thus preventing Acne scars.

The other treatment used by most dermatologists for Acne scar prevention is the use of Aplpha-Hydroxy Acids of AHA?s and Beta-Hydroxy Acids or BHA?s. These help the skins remodeling process, with the right concentration and proper application; these can also prevent acne scars.

Without the complicated chemicals and difficult dermatological treatments, you can also help prevent acne scars by treating your skin righteously. Avoid sun exposure, this can cause even more skin damage and may hamper the healing process of your skin. Wear sunscreen that has SPF 15 or higher. Picking at scabs never helped either. Never pick on acne as it heals; it interferes with the healing process and might worsen the resulting acne scar.

Of course, not even the most rigorous person can prevent acne scar, with the stress of everyday life, facial and other skin problems are really hard to avoid, there are however treatments available for acne scars, here are some of them.

Dermal Fillers

Collagen or other fillers are injected into the acne scar to raise is just a bit, so that it will be the same level as your skin, these treatments aren?t permanent though. They mostly last 3-6 months and you?ll need additional injections after that.

Punch Excision

This method is effective for some types of scars. It includes the surgical tool that matches the size of the scar; it can be compared to a cookie dough cutter. This tool cuts the scar out and the remaining wound is then sewed back together. The resulting scar will be unnoticeable, but if it is, it?ll be easier for laser resurfacing to treat it. Other types of this treatment include the use of skin grafts.

Laser Resurfacing

Laser resurfacing is a very popular and fast treatment for acne scars. Laser resurfacing basically works by burning a measure upper layer of the skin, and then letting it heal, leaving a newer looking skin. However, care must be taken after the procedure; the correct post operative procedure determines the success of the operation.

Mesothelioma Treatments

There are several methods of treatment for mesothelioma although none of these have a high success rate. In general, the chances of curing a mesothelioma patient depends on how much the cancer has developed and matured when treated. If tackled aggressively in its early stages, there is a good chance of survival. Due to the difficulty of diagnosing mesothelioma in its early stages, many mesothelioma treatments focus on improving the quality of life for patients.

Before a patient is treated upon, a doctor will decide what the best course of treatment is by considering the patient?s age, medical history, general well being and even weight. From here, the doctor will decide which of the three most common treatments are most suited to the patient?s condition. These treatments are surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Surgery

Surgery comes in two different types. Aggressive surgery is treatment which aims to gain long term control against the cancer and palliative procedures which aims to just relieve the patient of symptoms.

Aggressive surgery involves removing the pleura, the lung, the diaphragm and the pericardium. This procedure is known as extra pleural pneumonectomy. The aim of this is to remove as much of the tumour as possible without harming the patient. However, this is a very risky type of surgery and the chances are high of patient fatality within a month. Due to this, only young, fit individuals are referred to this form of treatment. Palliative procedures involve removing just the pleura in order to control the symptoms of the cancer. This is performed when mesothelioma is in an advanced form and is impossible to cure.

Chemotherapy

This is the most commonly known cure of cancer. Chemotherapy uses drugs to treat mesothelioma although many of these drugs have a poor success rate on patients. Combinations of drugs are often used to improve their effect. Some of these combinations have proved to be effective. Chemotherapy of mesothelioma is being improved regularly as research labs and pharmaceutical companies are discovering new and more effective drugs.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy uses radiation to kill the tumour which mesothelioma creates. However, this procedure is extremely difficult because of where the tumour grows. Due to the closeness of the tumour and many vital internal organs such as the heart and lungs, doctors have to be very careful as to the doses of radiation they use. Lower radiation doses can be used however this lowers its effectiveness.

Dual Therapy

This is often used and is just a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy combined. Surgery removes the majority of the tumour cells while chemotherapy and radiation therapy work on removing the remainder. This is an effective method and also lessens the symptoms of the cancer.

What is Acne?

Acne is a skin condition that affects millions of individuals everyday. Acne does have a clinical term, which is Acne Vulgaris, but is usually referred to only as ?acne?. There are a few variations acne, but the basic acne definition which applies to all forms is fairly simple. Acne is characterized by inflammation on the skin?s surface in the form of cysts, pustules, nodules, papules, pimples, blackheads, and/or white heads. Acne is caused by excess oil in the skin, the fluctuation of hormones, along with inflammation and bacteria. The epidemic of acne transcends cultural, age, and gender boundaries. Therefore, understanding exactly what acne is and how it forms is essential for everyone.

Many use the term ?pimple? synonymously with the term ?acne?. This is not completely correct; a pimple is a small swelling in the skin that is actually caused by acne. Pimples usually appear as small red or small flesh-colored bumps. Acne is a much more serious condition. If not treated properly it can cause swelling. Below is the explanation of how different forms of acne develop.

When oil from the sebaceous (or oil generating) glands become blocked, bacteria will begin to grow under the skin. This causes the follicle or pore to become blocked as well and this is when acne forms on the skin?s surface. A whitehead will form when the trapped oil and bacteria remain below the skin?s surface. On the other hand, when the trapped oil and bacteria become partially exposed on the skin?s surface, the melanin, or pigment, turns the bump black.

Acne can vary in severity. Some people suffer from pimples more so than acne. Pimples are less likely to cause scarring than acne and, thus, acne poses more of a problem for people. Acne in the form of blackheads can be more serious than acne in the form of white heads. The oil and bacteria that causes the blackhead takes longer to surface; as a result the acne can persist for a long period of time. When a whitehead develops, the cause of the acne (oil and bacteria), are more accessible?this is why it is so easy to pop a whitehead and so difficult to pop a blackhead. Although this is true, it is not recommended for anyone to pop either form of acne.

Arnica

Arnica (Arnica Montana) has been used extensively in European folk medicine. Arnica flower and root have been used as a pain reliever, expectorant, and stimulant. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 - 1832), the German philosopher and poet, drank Arnica tea to ease his angina in old age. Internal use is extremely risky and is not recommended. In countries where arnica is indigenous, it has long been a popular remedy for a variety of problems.

Arnica is remedy for
Bruises
Sprains
Muscle pain or joint inflammation
Chilblains, when skin in unbroken

Arnica improves the local blood supply and speeds the healing process. Arnica soothes and heals skin wounds and irritations. Repeated applications may produce sever inflammation. Most often an ointment or compress is used for external application.

Generally, the plant is taken internally only at a homeopathic dilution, principally for shock, injury, and pain. If taken as a decoction or tincture, it stimulates the circulation and can be a valuable treatment for angina and a weak or failing heart. It can be toxic even at low dosage, so it's rarely used in this way. Arnica Includes: Arnica contains a bitter yellow crystalline principle called Arnicin, and a volatile oil. Tannin and phulin are also present, along with sesquiterpene lactones and flavonoids. The flowers are said to contain more Arnicin than the rhizome, but no tannin. The volatile oil contains thymol, mucilage, and polysaccharides.

Improve Your Health With a Natural Colon Cleanse

Constipation is not the only symptom that indicates you might benefit from a natural colon cleanse. It is not uncommon for hard material made of a mixture of mucous and fecal matter to become impacted on the inside walls of the colon and intestines. This causes a variety of health problems. For one thing, nutrients have a harder time absorbing into the bloodstream from the intestines. This situation, in turn, can cause a person to feel tired, depressed, and bloated.

A colon cleanse works to soften and remove this material. A herbal colon cleanse is a natural version of a laxative basically. Herbs that help you move wastes through your system include cascara sagrada bark, aloe vera leaf, and fenugreek seed. These are often found in herbal formulas for constipation.

Other herbs that support the laxative effect of the above botanicals are fennel seed, which helps with gas and cramps, and peppermint, which aids the digestion. Along with laxative herbs, a colon cleanse is likely to include herbs like dandelion root or red clover, which are cleansing to the blood and the urinary tract, so that the whole system gets cleansed of toxins.

Unfortunately, herbs can be as harsh to the system as conventional laxatives. There is another type of natural colon cleanse on the market. This is an oxygen based formula that reacts chemically with the hydrochloric acid in your stomach. This chemical reaction causes the fecal material, sometimes called plaque, to melt into liquid and gas so it can be expelled easily.

The herbal colon cleanse will cause you to pass rubbery dark material with the consistency of tire tread, while the oxygen based natural colon cleanse will give you liquid or soft stools.

Another aspect of natural colon cleansing is to add fiber to the diet. This can be in the form of bran, psyllium seed husks, prunes, and many other natural foods. It is sensible, if you have problems with constipation anyway, to eat a fiber rich diet. Fiber alone, however, will not give you a complete colon cleanse. Still, it makes sense to eat more fiber rich fresh fruit, vegetables, and whole grains, and less junk food.

Colon cleansing can also include enemas. In fact, during a colon cleanse, you might be advised to have an enema on any day that you do not have a bowel movement. The goal is to have three or four bowel movements on any given day, which are likely if you choose an oxygen based cleanse.

Removing the fecal matter from the digestive tract will eliminate many toxins from your system. This can result in clearer skin, more energy, fewer headaches, improved allergy symptoms, and many other benefits. Of course, results vary from individual to individual, but there are many reports of multiple benefits from doing a colon cleanse.

There's a lot more to learn about colon cleansing, and you can do it at http://www.colon-cleaners.com

Ear Candling: Is It Safe?

Dr. Andrew Weil calls ear candling hocus pocus and he's not alone. Why then, do so many people still believe in a practice that is, at best, useless and, at worst, potentially harmful? Let's examine the natural practice of ear candling.

What Ear Candles Are

Sometimes referred to as ear cones, ear candles are long strips of beeswax-soaked fabric that have been wound into tight cone shapes. (Some manufacturers add ground herbs or essential oils but this practice is controversial among ear candle aficionados.)

After placing the small end of the stiff fabric cone into the ear canal, the practitioner lights the large end of the cone and allows the cone to burn down to within a few inches of the ear. After the cone is allowed to burn down to the appropriate length, the flame is extinguished and the remaining end of the cone is examined for toxins.

What Ear Coning Is Supposed To Do For You

Proponents of ear candles claim that candling create a gentle vacuum that opens the chakras. Ear candling, according to believers, can help relieve symptoms of tinnitus, migraine, sinusitis, and more.

But think about this for a moment. Ear wax is very, very sticky and your eardrum is fairly fragile. Any gentle vacuum that's strong enough to draw any impurities to the surface would have to be strong enough to damage your eardrum, wouldn't it?

Quite simply, ear candling can't work as its cheerleaders claim.

Is Ear Candling Safe?

It's impossible to tell exactly how many people practice ear candling but a 1996 survey of 144 physicians found that these physicians had treated 13 instances of external burns, 7 cases involving obstruction of the ear canal due to melted wax and at least one perforated ear drum. Clearly, ear candling can be dangerous if not performed carefully.

Nonsurgical Face Lift ? Defy Father Time and Mother Nature

Legend has that Helen of Troy had a face that launched a thousand ships. Probably she went in for a face lift every once in a while. A face lift is akin to a restoration job performed on a face, ravaged by time, weather elements or an unhealthy lifestyle. You have the surgical facelift, involving incisions and the painless non-surgical facelift. The latter is gaining popularity by the day.

These days, many types of non-surgical face lifts have been devised to lift the sagging face muscles, erase fine lines, wrinkles and scars and impart elasticity to the face. All these methods do not involve any pain or lengthy recuperation period and it can be carried on with other treatments.

Thermage facelift is the current rage amongst the beauty brigade. Relatively inexpensive compared to its surgical counterparts like derma abrasion and chemical peel, this face lift method involves only local anesthesia and is over within an hour, so that you can return to your daily routine without any grogginess or hideous bandages across your face.

The Thermage facelift method uses radiofrequency force to tighten the face and is suited for everybody except those fitted with a pacemaker. It guarantees results within a few days to five months. However, this facelift method is not much effective in treating the severely battered face. Extreme cases merit drastic surgical procedures like CO2 laser therapy.

The Microcurrent facelift is another non-surgical procedure fast gaining ground. Working at the cellular level, this face lift method whets up the body?s natural chemical processes to turn back the hands of time and give you a face to die for.

Over within an hour, the Microcurrent facelift will tone the face and neck muscles, lift the jaw line and the eyebrows, decrease pigmentation and erase fine lines and wrinkles. This facelift process is quite painless; you might only feel a slight tingle when mild electric currents are sent to your face.

Have pins and needles stuck on your arms, legs and face you can emerge with a younger, firmer looking face. That?s acupuncture for you, a non-surgical facelift procedure that is very safe and inexpensive. A huge hit amongst the hoi polloi and the stars alike, its detractors however raise questions about its ability to provide enduring results.

Laser skin rejuvenation or the ?lunchtime facelift? doesn?t believe in beating about the bush. It?s a quick face lift where your face is subject to mild laser rays, which send the collagen into an overdrive so that within weeks your wrinkles are erased, acne and blemishes removed and you have a firmer, face to flaunt. Usually devoid of any side effects, some might experience redness in the face, but this subsides within 1-2 hours.

You also have face masks and TCA peels which are easy to use, suit all skin types and give you a flawless, well-toned face. TCA skin peels have been proven to be the most effective of the non-surgical face lift procedures as it can cure susch a wide range of skin problems and disorders - from wrinkles and fine lines to age spots and acne. My First Colon Cleanse

My interest in colon cleansing began after reading a book by N.W. Walker. Mr. Walker is believed to be the father of juicing (not steroids, but rather fruits and vegetables) and it is also rumored that he lived to be around 120 years old. After reading his book sometime ago I found a colon therapist and had twelve sessions over a two month period.

The process involved laying on a table in the fetal position while the therapist inserts a plastic tube up your butt. Once secured you roll over gently so as not to push out the plastic probe and purified water is pumped into your colon. The sensation is a bit weird as the pressure builds and a bit uncomfortable until such time when the pumping is stopped and the pressure built inside your colon is released (along with some other stuff).

I must admit the process is a bit surreal. I was laying on a table with my knees bent, a clear plastic tube connected to my backdoor and I could see all the ?stuff? coming out and going through another larger clear tube that was illuminated for easier inspection of the floating material.

The therapist massaged my colon by pressing, pushing and pulling on my lower abdominal area to encourage the release of the toxic colon build-up. When the output began to decrease the therapist pumped more water in increasing the pressure to a slightly uncomfortable level then stopped pumping and the pressure was released through the exit tube. This process was repeated about three times each session.

Each visit was about 45 minutes to an hour in length. After the tube was removed I would sit on the toilet for a couple of minutes to evacuate any remaining water etc.

The therapist mentioned to me after my initial visit that I may experience some fatigue the following day and man was she right! I was exhausted! All I wanted to do was sleep. Apparently, cleaning your colon out is taxing on the body. I didn?t experience any fatigue after the subsequent visits and I?m assuming the reason for this was because my body wasn?t having to remove as much toxic build-up as the first time. Some people describe a feeling of being lighter after a colon cleansing and I never really felt that, but some interesting things did happened to me though.

After the second session I developed a small reddish rash on my stomach and mentioned this to my therapist. She explained that it was probably my body removing toxins that had been dormant in my colon. It wasn?t bothering me and I liked the idea that I was riding myself of the evil toxins so I didn?t worry about it. Over the course of the next week the rash had progressed to the undersides of my arms, midsection, and groin area. These rashes were very pronounced (raised) in the morning and dissipated during the course of the day so by bed time they were very faint and flat. This went on for weeks and with each passing week the rashes/hives became less noticeable until totally vanishing. I?m not allergic to anything and never had rashes/hives before so I believe my outbreak was a direct result of the colon cleanse therapy. I?m happy to report that I haven?t had an outbreak since.

Another thing that happened to me was about midway through my twelve sessions I developed a distaste for red meat! I?ve always been a meat eater and one of my favorite subs is a cornbeef sub. It was the weirdest thing! I first noticed that after I ate the cornbeef sub that I would feel nauseous for hours after eating it. Then it got to the point that when I thought about eating it I would feel sick. To this day I cannot eat red meat without feeling nauseous. I can?t even look at hamburger meat now! I am, however, able to eat turkey and chicken so I don?t know why I have issues with red meat.

I mentioned this to my therapist and she believed it was my body telling me that it didn?t want the meat because it was harmful. The analogy I would make to this would be someone who had smoked for a long period of time, quit for years, let their body get healthy, and then started smoking again.

Well, that?s my first experience with colon cleansing and I would say it was fairly successful. Did I feel a lot better or healthier because of it? A little. Would I recommend this to a family member or friend? Absolutely! Although my experience wasn?t stellar I definitely believe having a clean and healthy colon is the foundation to build your health upon. Remember death begins in the colon!

Colon Cleanse: Clean Your Body Of Toxins

Colon cleanse actually refers to cleaning ones body of the toxins. In order to live a natural and healthy life, colon cleanse is becoming popular with people. It makes one stay healthy for a longer period of time. Many people fret over the day they have to go through colon cleanse. A stomach pain, acidity or gas, are good reasons to talk over with your doctor about colon cleanse. This process assures you riddance from harmful toxins that have already done enough damage to your system.

Do As the Doctor Says

A colon cleanse must be done when the doctor advises one. Doing away with the poisonous toxins present in your body is the best way of taking care of your health. There are a number of things related to colon cleanse that people are unaware of. Most people have one or the other type of colon problem, which they don?t know about.

Every person stores waste in their colon that is equivalent to about five to twenty five pounds. If left unattended, over the years this problem of the colon can lead to health related problems. You can choose the best method that suits you. Eliminating the waste from your system assures you of a clean and healthy body.

Living a Healthy Life

Eating the right food and exercising regularly not only makes you healthy but also keeps your colon clean. When waste accumulates in the colon, it starts to affect the body. The poisonous gases that it releases, affects nutrient absorption directly. This in turn makes you feel unwell. Taking a colon cleanse will get rid of all the waste from the body. Eventually, you will start feeling much better and fully refreshed.

A number of herbs and vitamins are available in the market for colon cleanse. These products are not laxatives. These medications have no side effects. You can easily get a colon cleanse treatment and feel fresh and relaxed soon after. A great colon cleanse will assure you of a clean and healthy body for a longer time.

A colon cleanse treatment is the best way to rid your body of harmful chemicals and get a sound and healthy body.

Energy Psychology

The term energy psychology refers to a number of related energy therapies that are based on the Chinese Meridian System of medicine. Energy psychology quickly and thoroughly relieves mental health problems by eliminating emotional traumas or blockages from the mind/body continuum by touching or tapping key points on the body. Some of the more popular forms of energy psychology are Neuro Emotional Technique? or NET?, Thought Field Therapy or TFT, and Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT.

All these energy psychology techniques were developed in the mid 1980s to mid- 1990s, but are still rather unknown by the general public. These energy psychologies have been dubbed ?power therapies? because they work so quickly compared to traditional talk therapy. This appears to be due in part because they target the more primitive parts of the brain. These would include the Limbic system, the Medulla Oblongata, and the Enkephalin system, which is in every cell of the body. EMDR or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and Hypnosis are often included as ?power? therapies although they do not directly utilize the Meridian System.

EFT, TFT, and NET? all work by accessing the mind/body matrix or Meridian System in Chinese medicine. Chinese medicine addresses the body?s need for balance or homeostasis. If the Chi or energy of the body is in balance then it is assumed that the body will be able to cure itself and run at top efficiency. Practitioners assess the body?s balance by testing acupressure or acupuncture points in the body, which are divided up into 12 main Meridian Systems. These Meridian Systems are named for the main organs of the body such as the Lung Meridian or the Liver Meridian. Each of these systems corresponds with particular emotions. For example, the lung meridian is associated with grief and sorrow and the liver meridian with anger and resentment. Through a process of tapping acupuncture points on the body, trauma is relieved and homeostasis is reestablished.

Applied Kinesiology tests the Chi or energy by taking a strong indicator muscle, almost any major muscle, and asking the client or patient to lock that muscle while the practitioner tries to challenge the strength of the muscle to see if it will hold its position. The practitioner might ask a client to hold their arm straight out in front of them and lock it, while the clinician with an open hand firmly pushes down on the arm right above the wrist.

The body consists of water and electricity. It is believed that muscle testing checks to see if the muscle has enough electrical activity in it to hold. It appears that Chi is essentially the same as this electricity. Dr. Goodheart, the father of Applied Kinesiology or AK, first demonstrated therapy localization. Therapy localization occurs when the therapist tests a strong muscle alone or in the clear. Then either the client or the therapist touches another part of the clients? body to test if a change of muscle strength occurs. If it does, then dysfunction is assumed to be present in the localized area.

Chiropractors who practice AK routinely test or challenge a vertebra in the neck or the back, and if the muscle goes weak then they can assume that the vertebra is misaligned. They then put the vertebra back in and retest. When the muscle is strong it is assumed the vertebra is back in alignment. The client routinely reports feeling much better.

Although there are great similarities among these three main forms of energy therapies in that they all are based on Eastern medicine, there are also many salient differences, at least between TFT and NET?. Robert Callahan is the formulator of Thought Field Therapy. He developed his system after being introduced to Chinese medicine from a chiropractor who was practicing Applied Kinesiology, which is the same way that I became aware of these principles in 1990.

The energy therapies adapted and built on Dr. Goodhearts? work by applying AK to the emotional arena. Emotions are energy and therefore emotions can be muscle tested through the electrical system of the body. TFT differs from traditional AK, however, because most of Dr. Callahan?s techniques do not utilize muscle testing except minimally. Instead he developed several algorithms of tapping certain acupressure points while thinking of a problem such as an addiction or a phobia. This method often allows the body to return to homeostasis and therefore the craving is reduced or the fear is alleviated. Not only is it a highly effective system for many problems, but recent studies have shown that it is quicker and more effective than CBT or cognitive behavioral therapy. However, many repetitions of the treatment are often necessary with this particular type of energy therapy.

Emotional Freedom Technique is an offshoot of Thought Field Therapy. It was developed by Gary Craig, a minister and personal trainer. There seems to be very little difference between EFT and TFT. EFT taps all the meridians with the rationale that thereby they are bound to balance the affected meridian. EFT also varies the affirmations used in TFT. Most of the following systems that are offshoots of TFT also differ mostly in slight variations of tapping and/or affirmations and were developed later than TFT. These other systems include BSFF (Be Set Free Fast), EDxTM (Energy Diagnostic and Treatment Methods), ESM (Emotional Self-Management), EvTFT (Evolving Thought Field Therapy), FFFF ( Freedom From Fear Forever), HBLU (Healing from the Body Level Up), HSE (Human Software Engineering), PEAT ( Psycho Energetic Auro Technology), Seemorg Matrix Work, TAAP (TAAP Training Institute), TAT (Tapas Acupressure Technique), TEST ( Thought Energy Synchronization Therapies), and 3 in 1 (Three-in-One Concepts).

Dr. Scott Walker, a chiropractor and applied kinesiologist, developed Neuro Emotional Technique? or NET  in the early 1980?s. He developed his system independently from Dr. Callahan and within the same time frame. Both men were influenced by Dr. John Diamond who worked with Meridian systems in the late 1970?s and early 1980?s and developed Behavioral Kinesiology. Dr. Diamond stressed the use of positive verbal affirmations to change meridian systems.

All of the energy systems have great merit and are quite effective. What makes NET? or Neuro Emotional Technique? vastly superior and versatile is the tailored muscle testing that is the standard in this technique. Individual muscle testing makes pin point diagnosis of a problem possible.

Dr. Callahan was a cognitive behavioral therapist before becoming an energy therapist. Possibly because of this, practitioners of TFT often stress the theoretical importance of operant and classical conditioning or stimulus and response learning to explain why energy therapy is effective. Conditioning is certainly one of the main ways through which energy therapies work, but it is not the only component.

The essential reason that I believe NET? is so much more effective than any of the other energy therapies is that part of the muscle testing protocol involves assessing for the earliest event where a feeling or problem originated. Because of this component the energy balance is more complete, and as a clinician there usually isn?t a need to repeat the corrections multiple times, which is often the case with the other energy therapies.

The theoretical basis behind NET? is not only behavioral in nature, but psychodynamic. Freud?s concept of repetition compulsion is one of the central tenets of NET?. Freud believed that when a trauma is not fully processed or relieved an individual will develop a maladaptive symptom or behavior pattern in a fruitless attempt to resolve the original problem. A present stressor is more likely to become a trauma if it is similar to an event that was traumatic to an individual in their past. When the earliest trauma is relieved at the basic energy level, most present traumas collapse in response. Not addressing this earliest pain is the most common reason for psychological reversal, which shows up with much greater frequency in the other systems for energy rebalancing. Therefore, NET? seems to be more thorough in its approach, although it is still relatively unknown by mental health practitioners and the general public compared to TFT or EFT.

The world continues to dramatically shrink due to the amazing advances in technology and communication. In the past knowledge was often encapsulated by individual cultures. The brilliance of Eastern and Western thought is now beginning to mingle. The scientific method of the West is now being applied to some of the techniques of the East. There have been several studies in Florida universities and South America where TFT has been proved effective and NET? is now under extensive study at Oxford University. It will not be long until these recently discovered energy systems will take their place as accepted and respected treatment modalities. I believe that NET? will become the gold standard of these mind/energy therapies.
